Pretty Little Liars - Original Sin - Season 1 (DVD)

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin focuses more on horror, dark settings and classic references, but still remains a typical high school drama. Disadvantage: the common thread is often difficult to follow.
After the great success of Pretty Little Liars, the makers have already made several attempts to get a good spin-off off the ground. Ravenswood and The Perfectionists, however, did not match Pretty Little Liars and were both canceled after a season. With this third spin-off, the creators try their luck again with the well-known story. Original Sin is the new reboot of HBO-Max and hopefully has more success with viewers. Five teenage girls are confronted again with the anonymous 'A'. Do they have to pay for their own sins or the sins of their parents?

Where Pretty Little Liars was full of suspense due to the increased amount of messages from 'A' and the search for this unknown, Original Sin has turned the volume down a bit. 'A' is now sold more as a stalker than as an extortionist and the amount of messages has been drastically reduced. This removes a large part of the tension, especially because 'A' is much more physically present. Although still masked, 'A' in this series is much more tangible and this makes the series much less exciting.

The great thing about suspense is that it can be built up well in a series. The makers have enough time to leave a trail of clues so that the viewer can puzzle along and have an idea who that mysterious 'A' is before the denouement. At Original Sin, they unfortunately made the mistake of forgetting the breadcrumbs and it is not until the last episode that the makers give hints.

Original Sin is more focused on the horror genre. The dark settings and classic references combine with the elements of a typical high school drama series. Unfortunately, this spin-off is also a disappointment and it is time for a new concept. The special features on the DVD are entertaining but don't add much. The only interesting addition to the story were the character pieces. They give you more insight into the characters and who is behind them. Original Sin has been renewed by HBO for a second season. We'll have to wait and see if that'll be better than this first season.

About the writer, Karzal

Karzal
Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. The original articles, columns and reviews were actually written by others. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.
