Pretty Little Liars - Season 4A
The Return of DeAth, DespAir, and the LiArs!
After a four-month hiatus, our four favourite liars, Spencer (Troian Bellisario, 'Lauren'), Hanna (Ashley Benson, 'Days of Our Lives'), Aria (Lucy Hale, 'Privileged'), and Emily (Shay Mitchell, 'Aaron Stone'), have finally returned. Season 4A of 'Pretty Little Liars', based on the book series by Sara Shepard, premiered on June the 11th and has recently aired their mid-season finale.
But first, where did season three leave us? Season 3B took the story of A’s torment much further and it introduced the new and mysterious Red Coat who seems to be stalking the Liars as well. Red Coat’s motives are questionable even after she saves the Liars from the burning lodge. And, of course, the last scene ends with the four Liars and Mona Vanderwaal (Janel Parrish, 'Heroes') making a major discovery in the trunk of Detective Wilden’s (Bryce Johnson, 'Death Valley') long-lost police car.
After four months filled with anticipation, we finally discover the true contents of the car: Detective Wilden’s body. This season will shed light on some of our burning questions, however, even more questions will be provoked. It will revolve almost solely around Wilden’s death and how this affects the girls; guaranteeing several nerve-wracking moments. Of course, the series will also continue the torment of A and the girls’ efforts in trying to find out who A truly is. The show has gone off into a new course which is keeping the show fresh and exciting; A is no longer just a threat to the Liars, A is now also targeting the girls’ parents. No one is safe!
And then there’s Red Coat. Who is she and what is she up to? And, let’s address the elephant in the room, is she involved with Alison’s (Sasha Pieterse, 'Heroes') disappearance, Detective Wilden’s death, and A’s torment? Not all of these questions will be answered in season 4A but we will get heaps of new information and clues on who could be behind everything, who’s responsible for Wilden’s death, and who Red Coat is.
I can promise you one thing, the mid-season finale ends with a bang and has the conspiracy theories spreading like wildfire! We’re also introduced to several new characters that will spice up the story even more but let’s not forget the characters that will rise to importance even more; you haven’t seen the last of Ezra Fitz (Ian Harding, 'Hollywood Is Like High School with Money') and CeCe Drake (Vanessa Ray, 'Suits').
This first part of the season certainly lives up to its expectations and will leave the fans devastated with false hopes, disillusions, and many, many questions. The acting is superb, the script is astonishing, and the suspense is literally killing off characters and figuratively killing the fans. 'Pretty Little Liars' returns for their Hallowe’en special on the 22nd of October and then it will take a couple of months before the show returns for part B.
Until then: ‘only two can keep a secret if one of them is dead’.
