When Gigi's mother reconnects with an old boyfriend in Putain, her son Gigi gives her a choice: him or her boyfriend. Damn, damn, damn, right? Would you add a series with a title like damn to your to-watch list? The idea of having to listen to hours of cursing is not exactly something to look forward to. In the case of Putain (damn in French), we might as well accept the cursing. Putain is a socially engaged series set in Brussels that still gives humanity food for thought.
In this first episode we meet seventeen-year-old Gigi who spends a lot of time on the streets with a few friends. He tries to earn some extra money here and there. His life is anything but sunshine and roses. His mother is addicted and after she has kicked the habit she brings an old friend back into her home. Gigi doesn't like that because the man in question is also an addict. Gigi gives his mother the choice between him or her new (old) friend. For the time being he moves in with a good friend of his where he can crash for a while.
In the first episode we get to know Gigi and his friends and the environment in which they live. Since they are also still required to attend school, we also see them during school activities. On the one hand, this series is aimed at young people, but many adults will also be able to learn a lot of life lessons from it. Of course, you have to like the genre, which is not the case for me.
One of the most important creators of this fictional series is rapper Zwangere Guy, a Brussels Ketje who partly reached for his own life as a growing teenager to write this series. The people behind the camera have succeeded in finding young actors who play their role in this drama with bravado. The whole thing is solidly constructed and conveys the message clearly. Putain can certainly be counted among the better series work with a serious added value that will probably grab a few prizes here and there at various competitions where series prizes are awarded.
About the writer, Karzal
Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. The original articles, columns and reviews were actually written by others. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.
