Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is a sparkling series set in the enchanting universe of the Bridgerton family. This spin-off takes us back in time and reveals the fascinating story of Queen Charlotte. Queen Charlotte is a new series in the Bridgerton world. It is not a new season of Bridgerton but a separate story starring Queen Charlotte. The series takes place in two timelines, namely the timeline of a young Queen Charlotte and the older Queen Charlotte we know from the Bridgerton series. Lady Danbury also has a very big part and we learn about her marriage and how as a smart woman she has worked herself up in the Ton.
Queen Charlotte's marriage to King George is part of the "Great Experiment" to unite the noble community and everyone of different backgrounds. This is a more serious subject than from the other series, but again Lady Danbury is the strong woman you know from Bridgerton. However, Queen Charlotte doesn't seem to be too concerned with this and also seems to come across as a bit ignorant. Which doesn't quite tally with the woman she later is.
You can't help but admire Lady Danbury and how smart she is. Queen Charlotte, in comparison, is slightly less 'likable'. Her romance with the king is the red thread in the story and you sympathize with her very much. But as we know from Bridgerton, she's not the friendliest of women and has gotten quite tough in old age. The chemistry between Charlotte and George is very palpable and you constantly hope that everything will work out. But how they show someone with a mental illness is very strongly done.
There is also a little sideline romance involving Brimsley and Reynolds. They are both the personal servants of the King and Queen. And despite the brief moments, they are great fun together.
Another aspect that sets Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story apart is its superb production value. It is clear that great attention has been paid to every detail, from the beautiful cinematography to the lush music that perfectly accompanies the scenes. It remains fun to guess which popular contemporary song is played as a classical piece.
All in all, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is a brilliant addition to the Bridgerton universe. Whether you're a fan of the original Bridgerton series or just looking for a delightful historical drama series, this spin-off is sure not to disappoint. I would watch the Bridgerton series first though
Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. The original articles, columns and reviews were actually written by others. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.
