Ray Donovan - First Episode

'Ray Donovan' is one of those series viewers look forward to long before the premiere. I was also curious about this series. 'Ray Donovan' won't premiere until June 30th but the hour-long first episode was on the internet since June 18th.

The series starts with Mickey Donovan (Jon Voight, 'Lone Star') who is released from prison who then immediately visits a priest and shoots him. The next person we meet is Deonte Frasier, who wakes up to an unknown girl who apparently died of a drug overdose. Not long after that, we meet Ray Donovan (Liev Schreiber, best known for movies like 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine'). Deonte calls the sleeping Ray Donovan and asks him to solve his problem. The series seems to start off excitingly and I definitely want to continue watching. It has provoked an interest in the series.

Ray Donovan is a professional fixer who makes the problems of the rich and famous in Los Angeles disappear. But it’s not just Ray Donovan; it’s a complete organisation. This makes the series credible. I'm usually not convinced when it’s just one person that is the hero, but in 'Ray Donovan' it’s a complete organisation that solves the problems.

Ray’s team consists of Lena (Katherine Moennig, 'The L Word') and Avi (Steven Bauer). And then there's Ray's boss, Lee Drexler (Peter Jacobson). Lena seems to be the person who answers phone calls and takes care of Public Relations (PR). Avi seems to have a Russian accent and to me he’s immediately one of the funniest characters. The combination of his faulty mafia English and his way of reacting makes that he appears to be very funny. The actors have been well-cast and suit the series well.

But the series does not consist merely of cases to be solved by Ray and his team; we also get a glimpse of Ray’s private life. Ray has a wife, Abby (Paula Malcomson, 'Deadwood'), and two kids, Conor (Devon Bagby) and Bridget (Kerris Dorsey, 'Brothers & Sisters'). However, he and his father and brothers are the main cause of problems. Mickey Donovan has been released from prison five years earlier, his brother Bunchy (Dash Mihok, 'Greetings from Home') is an alcoholic, and his other brother, Terry (Eddy Marsan), has Parkinson’s disease. He also appears to have a black half-brother, and a sister who committed suicide. It's an interesting mix of characters, so you instantly know you can expect a lot from this series.

So all of them get into trouble on a regular basis. Ray, too, because he has not always been as faithful to his wife as he should be. Ray and his brothers had a troubling past, of which we get to see fragments in the first episode. This creates yet another dimension to the series and this will undoubtly play a big part since their father has been released from prison earlier on.

The actors have been cast very well. They did manage to get actors like Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight for this series but I am also very pleased with the other actors. The first episode is fast-paced and you'll have to stay focussed. Even though some series are too fast-paced and other series are to slow, I feel 'Ray Donovan' has a nice pace. The supporting cast is also well-cast. As a fan of 'One Tree Hill', guest star Austin Nichols was a pleasant surprise.

Even though the first episode was good and the case was very interesting and well put together, I’m curious whether they can keep up this quality with every episode's case. However, I definitely feel that this will be one of the quality series this summer. And if they keep it interesting and play it out well, there will probably be a second season.
