Red Band Society officially cancelled

For the fans of the dramedy ‘Red Band Society’ there is a bit of good news and a lot of bad news. Starting with the good news: Fox has decided that the last three episodes will be broadcast on Saturday 31 January and Saturday 7 February. The bad news is that these will also be the very last episodes. Red Band Society will get no second season.

The dramedy, ‘Red Band Society’ revolves around the young patients and caretakers of the pediatric ward of the renowned Ocean Park Hospital in Los Angeles. The cast includes Octavia Spencer, Dave Annable, Griffin Gluck, Nolan Sotillo, Charlie Rowe, Astro, Zoe Levin, Ciara Bravo, Mandy Moore, and Rebecca Rittenhouse.

The series premiered in September 2014 with very low ratings and those figures got lower every week. So it came as no surprise when FOX decided not to order additional episodes. That generally means that a series will not be renewed, but FOX and ABC Studios both attempted to keep the series on the air.

Although 'Red Band Society' ratings were too low to keep it on the air like a regular-season series, the network wanted to keep it as a potential summer series. The problem with a summer series is that it needs a lower license fee. And ‘Red Band Society’ is a high-end series and budgets for summer series are really tight. It is ultimately no big surprise that a deal couldn't be worked out with the studio for FOX to keep the series.

Executives at ABC Studios that also liked the series have tried to sell the series to keep the series going. But in the end there were no buyers for the series so now 'Red Band Society' has officially been taken to the cemetery of cancelled series.

Hopefully ‘Red Band Society’ will get a nicely rounded ending on 7 February, so that the fans will get some sense of closure.
