Red Band Society - Pilot

'Red Band Society' is a keeper. The series was already in our top 10 of promising series and on many other lists of series to look forward to. However, you still have to live up to the expectations. And that's exactly what they did. It's a series which causes both tears and laughter in just 43 minutes. It makes sure that you can empathise with all the characters in this short time span. 'Red Band Society' is a remake of the Spanish series 'Polseres Vermelles'.

'Red Band Society' is about young people and their caregivers in Ocean Park hospital. The place is a second home for these youngsters, or maybe just home. They live there and go to school there. They experience it as some sort of boarding school, but the difference is that everyone has some sort of illness. For example, we've got the cancer patients Leo (Charlie Rowe) and rookie Jordi (Nolan Sotillo), the cheerleader with heart problems Kara (Zoe Levin), the intelligent Emma (Ciara Bravo, 'Big Time Rush') with an eating disorder, Dash (Brian “Astro” Bradley, 'The X Factor') the player with cystic fibrosis and there's even a kid in a coma.

They are all different and if it hadn't been for their illnesses and if they'd gone to a regular high school, they might not have been friends. But in Ocean Park hospital, they are drawn to each other and develop an unexpected bond. They pull each other through and in the meantime they are having fun, which is good to see. The series is being compared to the earlier seasons of 'Glee' – without the singing – but personally, I think 'Red Band Society' is better. There's more room for empathy and the number of dramatic and comical moments is higher. Near the end of the first episode, you'll discover why the series is called 'Red Band Society'.

The boy in the coma, Charlie (Griffin Gluck, 'Back in the Game') is the one who narrates the episodes from his coma. He may be in a coma, but he still hears everything and might even know more about what's going on than all the other people do. Albeit somewhat unrealistic – which is not very relevant, since it does work – we are able to see him alive and well when one of the youngsters is caught between life and death and can talk with him.

Even though they are more supporting than main characters, the great actors Octavia Spencer ('The Help') and Dave Annable ('Brothers & Sisters') can be seen in the series as respectively nurse Jackson and doctor McAndrew. This doesn't make them less important, because we get to see their unique role in the series in not only the funny moments, but also in the touching moments. Spencer portrays the bitchy nurse with the heart of gold and Annable the charming and kind doctor. Given the fact that I was a huge fan of him in the series 'Brothers & Sisters', I was very pleased to see him in this part.

The youngsters of the cast are fresh and can learn a lot from Spencer and Annable. But even though they are not well-known yet and they don't have a lot of acting experience, they do manage to portray credible characters. They have managed to make me laugh already in the pilot, but also caused some tears. The story is beautifully and fluently written and I am very curious if they will manage to maintain this level in the remainder of the season. I would like to see more of this. 'Red Band Society' officially premiered on 17 September.
