Redemption - Season 1
Redemption continues to intrigue until the predictable ending.
What are the chances it happens to you? Policewoman Collette Cunningham's (Paula Malcomson, Deadwood) life seems to be going smoothly. When she receives a call from the Garda (police) in Dublin, her world is turned upside down. A dead young woman has been found and there is a link to Collette. However, Collette does not know anyone in Dublin. That's why she doesn't go into it at first. When the Garda tells more about the young woman in question, Collette can't help but leave for Dublin in a hurry.
Once there, she comes into contact with her past. It is the reason to stay in Dublin for a long time and to look for the background of the young woman's death. It causes old demons to come back to life. Collette is suddenly faced with all kinds of new challenges. In the field of work but certainly also in the field of her private life. If both are mixed, as is often the case in this kind of series, the situation for Collette only becomes more complex.
Redemption is a typical Irish/British crime drama. It is performed at a high level. Life is played as it really is. Supplemented with some extras to make it an exciting story. Collette is a strong-willed and strong woman. She knows how to persevere when others fail. She now only finds herself in a situation that even she could not have foreseen. This requires major adjustments, especially in her private life. It shows a different side of Collette. The family drama is well intertwined with the search for the truth behind the young woman's death.
The only downside is that the ending is a bit too predictable. That could have been thought through a little better. There are surprising elements that can put you on the wrong track as a viewer, but the final outcome will not surprise anyone. That's a shame, because the rest of the story is well put together. The mix of crime and family drama has the right proportions.
Collette is not the depressed, traumatized woman you often see in this kind of series. Not that she doesn't have a dark past. That will become clear this season. She doesn't wallow in her trauma but has eventually learned to deal with it. It makes her fight doggedly for justice. Her past plays a very important role in this specific case. This can be noticed in several ways. It provides the right motivation to get to the heart of the matter.
