Fox cancels lifeguard drama Rescue: HI-Surf after one season

Fox has canceled John Wells' Hawaii-set lifeguard drama Rescue: HI-Surf after one season.
The drama Rescue: HI-Surf follows a group of water rescue workers along the North Shore of Oahu and comes from writer Matt Kester (Animal Kingdom (2016)).

Warner Bros. Television, John Wells' longtime studio, produced the series in conjunction with Fox Entertainment.

Rescue: HI-Surf

In 2023, Fox gave Rescue: HI-Surf a straight-to-series order for its 2023-2024 schedule, with Wells set to produce and direct the first two episodes.

The series, which featured a tense life-or-death struggle, starred Zoe Cipres, Kekoa Kekumano, Arielle Kebbel, Robbie Magasiva, Adam Demos and Alex Aiono.

The series chronicled the dramatic rescues and interpersonal dramas of a team of first responders working on a particularly dangerous stretch of Oahu’s North Shore. Kester served as showrunner and executive producer, along with Wells and Erin Jontow of John Wells Productions.

The cancellation of Rescue: HI-Surf comes as streaming giants Netflix and Prime Video increasingly dominate the television market and May upfronts, while traditional networks like Fox try to catch up.
