Sausage Party: Foodtopia - Season 1

Sausage Party: Foodtopia is the humorous sequel to the animated movie Sausage Party. The series follows the food from Shopwell’s supermarket after they have wiped out humanity and conquered the world.
The animated film Sausage Party was released in cinemas in 2016. This comedy, despite its cute appearance, was created for adults and clearly pushed boundaries. It turned out to be a success and a sequel was therefore inevitable. This summer, Sausage Party: Foodtopia was released on Amazon Prime Video, an eight-part series that continues where the film ended. How is the food from the supermarket doing now and what are their dreams for the future now that they have defeated humanity?

Episode three was a highlight for me in terms of humor, but I think that most will not quickly forget episode six

The story of Sausage Party: Foodtopia starts a few days after the events that took place in the film. The food has left the supermarket, take their first steps outside and rename the world to Foodtopia. Sausage Frank (Seth Rogen, Freaks and Geeks) and sandwich Brenda (Kristen Wiig, Palm Royale) are still the leaders of the rebellion and have not taken half measures in exterminating humanity. Now that the outside world is theirs, they celebrate, which happens in 'the usual way'. The orgy with which the animated film ended is continued with similar intensity, which immediately sets the tone.

From dog food bags to eggs, and from cupcakes to pieces of fruit, it all comes to life in Sausage Party: Foodtopia. Little sausage Barry (Michael Cera, Life & Beth) is also back and seems to have gone a bit wild. He is craving adrenaline and misses some excitement now that the battle with humanity is over. Sammy Bagel Jr. (Edward Norton, Extrapolations) is in deep mourning after the death of his partner Lavash (David Krumholtz, Numb3ers). He tries to process this loss in his own way, but this does not always do his character any good. The arrogant and egocentric orange Julius (Sam Richardson, Veep) quickly manages to build an empire in Foodtopia. He wants absolute power and wealth and seems to stop at nothing and for no one to achieve that.

It is undeniable that there is a star cast behind the series. If there were not so many references to the appearance of the characters, you would almost forget that these are animated figures. References to contemporary themes are also nicely incorporated into the script. For example, Foodtopia struggles with the same problems as the human world. When it turns out that one person, Jack (Will Forte, The Last Man on Earth) has survived the great battle, he is kidnapped by the food in their search for answers. After all, what is that flood of water that suddenly seems to come from the sky? And how do you protect yourself against those flying killing machines that pick food from the ground out of nowhere?

Sausage Party: Foodtopia is a series that is not very easy to watch without having seen the film. It is possible, but you'd miss certain references when you only watch the series. However, this can also be an advantage, because one downside of the series was the many similarities with the film. Jokes from the movie film are reused and the element of surprise is missing at times because so many absurdities were already covered there. I would have liked to see a bit more creativity during the episodes in that regard, because that would certainly have improved.

Fans of the film will probably enjoy this sequel, but the humor and style of storytelling will certainly not be to everyone's taste

Episode three was a highlight for me in terms of humor, but I think that most will not quickly forget episode six, if only because this episode starts with a warning because of the themes and explicit images that will be shown during the episode. Although the story goes in all directions, there is a clear common thread, namely the development of Foodtopia. Sausage Party: Foodtopia revolves around bizarre circumstances and humor, but there is also room for drama. I find it remarkable that the makers have managed to convey this meaningfully between all the jokes and gags.

Sausage Party: Foodtopia is a series for a very specific target group. Fans of the film will probably enjoy this sequel, but the humor and style of storytelling will certainly not be to everyone's taste. A second season is already in development and, personally, I think there is still material left to fill more seasons. In terms of quality, this sequel is not nearly as good as the film, but it is certainly a good attempt to continue the story. The fact that the episodes only last half an hour each is a plus in my opinion. It is not too long-winded but there is still enough time left to tell the story. There is still room for improvement, but all in all, I give this season a more than adequate grade.
