Kay's sister Dorothy Farinelli, portrayed by Amanda Righetti in the younger version and by Jamie Lee Curtis in the later period, is skeptical about this return and wishes that Kay would not get involved again.
The series is a forensic crime thriller adapted for television by Elizabeth Sarnoff, known for Barry and Lost.
Central to the story is Scarpetta’s determination to give victims a voice, unmask a serial killer, and prove that a crucial case from her past, which shaped her career, will not also mean her downfall.
As she tries to uncover the truth, she faces complex personal and professional relationships, including a tense bond with her sister Dorothy, old conflicts from her career, and hidden secrets that could threaten everything she has built.
The series is set against the backdrop of modern forensic science and goes beyond merely solving crimes by also exploring the psychological impact on both the perpetrators and the investigators. This creates a layered thriller that shows the emotional and mental toll the pursuit of justice can take.
In addition to Kidman, McEwen, Righetti, and Curtis, the cast includes Bobby Cannavale, Simon Baker, and Ariana DeBose. Jake Cannavale plays the younger version of Bobby Cannavale's character, while Hunter Parrish portrays the younger version of Simon Baker's character.
The original book series by Patricia Cornwell, where Kay Scarpetta first appeared in 1990, has been a massive success worldwide, with over 120 million copies sold.
Scarpetta premieres on Wednesday, March 11, on Prime Video.
