Netflix Orders Live-Action Scooby-Doo Series

Netflix Orders Live-Action Scooby-Doo Series

Netflix has given an eight-episode series order to a live-action series of the classic animated series Scooby-Doo.
The live-action series will explore the origins of the famous mystery-solving teenage gang and their beloved dog. The project from Midnight Radio, Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television entered competitive development at the streamer last spring with a top-tier scripted-to-series commitment.

Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!

Written by Josh Appelbaum & Scott Rosenberg (Cowboy Bebop (2021)) from Midnight Radio, based on characters created by Hanna-Barbera, the yet-untitled Scooby-Doo series tells the story of how the Mystery Inc. gang came together and worked together for the first time to solve the spooky case that started it all.

During their last summer at camp, old friends Shaggy and Daphne find themselves embroiled in a spooky mystery involving a lonely stray Great Dane puppy who may have witnessed a supernatural murder. Teaming up with pragmatic, scientific townie Velma and odd but handsome newcomer Freddy, they set out to solve the case that will drag each of them into a horrifying nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.

“Mystery, Inc. is back in business! We’re excited to bring Scooby-Doo to TV as a live-action series for the first time,” said Peter Friedlander, VP, Scripted Series, Netflix. “The beloved franchise has had an impact on pop culture that is undeniable — it’s rich with universal themes of friendship that generations of fans have long embraced. Together with creative powerhouses Berlanti Productions and Midnight Radio, we’re committed to delighting longtime fans and opening up a world of groovy adventures for a new era of meddling kids.”

The pickup ensures Berlanti Productions’ continued presence on Netflix as the company’s drama series You wraps next month. The project also has personal significance for Berlanti, who has tackled a number of other classic Warner Bros. titles, including DC content.

In addition to You, Warner Bros. TV has the new comedy series Running Point on Netflix. After a strong start, the Kate Hudson-starring series quickly scored a renewal for season two.

Hopefully the style will be better than those previous live-action attempts, as they were quite disappointing.

Hmm, we'll see - I don't see the need to try and adapt it for live-action (again). Recently, most animation > live-action adaptations have been pretty much flops...
