The beloved hospital comedy series Scrubs is officially getting a reboot: ABC has placed a straight-to-series order.Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke will both return in their original roles, along with Zach Braff, who signed on for the sequel in May. All three will also serve as executive producers.
The new series follows JD Dorian (Braff) and Christopher Turk (Faison), who are operating together for the first time in a long time. The medical world has changed, the new class of interns is different, but the iconic friendship between JD and Turk remains strong. As both familiar faces and new characters try to find their way at Sacred Heart, the series promises plenty of humor, warmth, and surprises.
Judy Reyes, who originally played head nurse Carla Espinosa, currently has a series regular role on ABC's hit series High Potential. However, sources say positive discussions are underway to rearrange her schedule to work on both series.
Scrubs is the second new scripted series ABC has announced for the 2025-26 season, joining the drama 9-1-1: Nashville, which premieres in the fall. Scrubs is expected to premiere midseason.
Original Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence is back on board as an executive producer. "Scrubs means so much to me. I'm thrilled we have the opportunity to reunite the band," Lawrence said in a statement.
The original Scrubs ran from 2001 to 2008 on NBC before moving to ABC for its final two seasons, which aired in 2009 and 2010. The series centered on young doctors J.D., Turk, and Elliot Reid (Chalke), and the staff of Sacred Heart Hospital.
Lawrence previously said of the reboot that he sees it as a hybrid: part revival that follows the old characters again fifteen years after the original ending, and part reboot that also introduces new surgical interns.
