No one wants an imminent invasion of shape-shifting creatures. Fortunately, Nick Fury comes to the rescue in Secret Invasion to prevent this, but who can be trusted due to possible metamorphosis? In recent times, not all Marvel series have proved equally successful. Yet Marvel still sees potential in this formula. The company has made some adjustments to accommodate fans. The main point of criticism is the frequency with which content comes to us and the associated varying quality that this entails. To turn the tide, Marvel has scaled back the frequency as Secret Invasion is the first Marvel series this year. In addition, they use refined actors who know what quality means. This works out pretty well in the first episode of Secret Invasion.
In the new Marvel series Secret Invasion, set in the current MCU, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson, The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey) learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls. Fury joins his allies, including Everett Ross (Martin Freeman, Breeders), Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders, Stumptown), and the Skrull Talos (Ben Mendelsohn, The Outsider (2020)), who has built a life for himself on Earth. Together they race against time to thwart an impending Skrull invasion and save humanity.
Nick Fury promised the Skrulls a home of their own long ago. A planet on which their species can build a life in peace. However, Fury has not been able to keep this promise to date and some Skrulls have become rebellious over the years. There are now indications that the Skrulls have chosen Earth to act as their new abode. To prevent this invasion, Fury returns to Earth after a long absence.
Once Fury is reunited with some allies, the story begins to pick up. In the first episode, you can admire some exciting chases and fistfights. All this to find out who plans to conquer the Earth. An initial impetus for this follows from information gathered that a potential attack will be committed. Our Marvel heroes want to prevent this attack at all costs, but the series takes a shocking turn.
The actors deliver excellent acting performances. Samuel L. Jackson continues to prove time and time again that he is a seasoned actor. From the first moment he appears on screen, he effortlessly takes the series to a higher level with his charismatic appearance. He also brings out the vulnerable side of Nick Fury this time. He is physically and mentally not quite the Fury we know. I'm curious how this will unfold in the series.
Fury's opponents are also portrayed by great actors. Newcomer G'iah (Emilia Clarke, Game of Thrones) is already introduced in the first episode. I have the feeling that she is going to play an important role. We also see newcomers Sonya Falsworth (Olivia Colman, Broadchurch) and Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir, High Fidelity) passing by. To which side these characters belong is still unknown, but that is the case with almost everyone. That makes Secret Invasion interesting to watch.
If it manages to maintain this quality then I think we are dealing with one of the best Marvel series to date.
All in all, the first episode of Secret Invasion promises a lot of good. Of course, this episode focused on setting up a story, but I'm curious how this story will develop. Because the Skrulls can change into any shape, you as a viewer are constantly wondering whether it is the actual person or a Skrull in disguise. This tension and the good cast make me look forward to the rest of the episodes. If it manages to maintain this quality then I think we are dealing with one of the best Marvel series to date.
About the writer, Karzal
Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. The original articles, columns and reviews were actually written by others. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.
The first episode certainly did not disappoint - despite high expectations! I'm very curious about how the rest of the season will unfold, but also about the influence the series will have on the rest of the MCU.
When I look at what Marvel has presented us with so far, it certainly is. It's also based on the first episode so they could completely ruin my opinion. If you look at the audience scores, it is anywhere between 7 and 8. I agree with that. But fortunately tastes may differ. That's what makes series so fun, plenty of conversation starters! :)
