Nick Fury is finally back in an adventure where he takes center stage for the first time. With a good cast and special effects, Secret Invasion manages to create an entertaining storyline, but it lacks a "wow factor".Secret Invasion is (like many of the Marvel productions) based on a very popular storyline from the Marvel comics. This time it's about the Skrulls who secretly want to take over the world. The tricky thing about the Skrulls, an alien population whose home planet no longer exists, is that they can change shape and take over the memories of those people. So from the characters you see, you never know whether they are actually this, or whether you are actually looking at a Skrull. That can of course provide nice (sometimes obvious) plot twists.
The series consists of six episodes that vary in length between 36 and 56 minutes. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson: The Last Days of Ptolemy Gray) takes center stage for the first time in a Marvel production. Nick Fury was the one who brought the Avengers together and was the leader of S.H.I.E.L.D. He had gone into space since the battle with Thanos.
The threat of invasion by the Skrulls has him back and feels responsible for solving the problem. To have a little more background story for watching Secret Invasion, it is advisable to watch the Captain Marvel movie first. The events of that film are therefore often referred to. Some scenes of Secret Invasion also take place in the period between Captain Marvel and the series.
In addition to Samuel L. Jackson, Disney/Marvel has managed to put together a true star cast for Secret Invasion. Marvel veterans Don Cheadle (The Wonder Years) return as Rhodey, Ben Mendelsohn (The Outsider) as Thalos, Martin Freeman (Fargo) as Agent Ross and Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) as Maria Hill, among others. New faces include Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) and Oscar and Emmy winner Olivia Colman (The Crown). Because of this and the high production level, Secret Invasion is in any case a pleasure for the eye.
Secret Invasion is [...] very easy on the eyes.
In addition, I noticed that Secret Invasion was a bit coarser than the other Marvel productions (except for Deadpool (film) and the Netflix series such as The Punisher and Marvel's Daredevil, of course). I did think that the series got off to a slow start at certain times, which doesn't always have to be a negative. In this way, the viewer finally gets to know Nick Fury a little better and it becomes a less superficial character than was usually the case in the Marvel films. Although the series was well put together, it did not fully captivate me. Maybe it's because it's often a bit predictable, or because it's somewhat similar to movies and series we've seen before. Or is it superhero fatigue? I do not think so. The Marvel movies and series are still very popular and continue to do well (in general) commercially.
Secret Invasion is a solid series with an amazing cast. The images are, as can be expected, spectacular and it is simply a few hours of enjoyment. Still, the series is a bit less catchy than many of the other Marvel productions, perhaps due to its predictability or lack of innovation. Anyway, it won't stop me from watching future Marvel productions as well.
Based on everything mentioned above, Secret Invasion gets a well-deserved 7.5.
