While attending the BAFTA Awards where she won the Rising Star award, Mackey revealed that she would not return for an eventual fifth season.
"Season five? I just finished the fourth last week!" she told RadioTimes. "No, I don't think I'll be in season five. I've said goodbye to Maeve."
Mackey (pictured) had previously revealed that she would be taking a step back in season four and her character reportedly wouldn't be as overbearing.
"It feels very familiar! And it's a little bit more sporadic because we have more characters. So there's… I'm not that consistent with it," she said ahead of filming season four. "But we're in the middle of filming right now, and I'm excited to be back. And yes, I'm curious to see what's going to happen - because I don't know either. I'll find out as we go, so it's going to be fun!"
Mackey isn't the only Sex Education star to leave the series after its fourth season. Ncuti Gatwa, who also stars alongside Mackey in Greta Gerwig's Barbie, recently stopped filming his character Eric.
"Last day. Last time. Bye bubs, thanks for all the lessons and for all the strength," he shared in an Instagram post.
Gatwa's (pictured) next television role will be the fifteenth Doctor in the long-running series Doctor Who.
Season four of Sex Education saw a major cast shake-up with multiple actors leaving the series including Rakhee Thakrar, Tanya Reynolds, Patricia Allison and Simone Ashley.
