If, like me, you're in your thirties, chances are you grew up with Denis Leary in the 80's. Denis was that testosterone gushing guy, the man of men, who on MTV spit his opinion against your screen in no uncertain terms. A real guy. The type of man who knows exactly what all the stuff is for in the Gamma. The type of guy who can wear cowboy boots undisturbed without being completely fucked up. A man who can confidently lift the hood of your Volvo station to tell you exactly where that rattling sound is coming from. That was Denis. The women wanted him and the men wanted to be him. At least I do. Denis was pure Rock & Roll. You didn't have to have a huge imagination to imagine him waking up in his hotel room in the morning in a king-size bed with a naked beauty flown in from distant continents on both sides. The same hotel room that he smashed up and down again the following night from the coke, because room service had put too little vermicelli in his vegetable soup. The kind of rocker who calls his run-down Fender Betsy Mae and picks up songs about all the broken relationships that have ended behind him. That was Denis and that was also what I hoped to get when FX built him into a series about the comeback of an old rocker, but that went a little differently. Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll is a bit like Guns' n Roses, which enthusiastically released Chinese Democracy after a hundred years. Much to do about nothing. Axl and his friends thought they were going to settle back into the great of the earths, but the world shrugged uninterestedly and got on with what it was doing. Guns' n Roses. From crowded stadiums all over the world to the squeaky speakers of the cat food aisle in Albert Heijn. Faded glory. Denis should have stayed Denis from MTV. The man with an opinion. Not the tight blonde midlife crisis rocker Johnny Rock (I'm not making it up) who helps his daughter Gigi to become the world's new rock bitch in a wafer-thin comedy. A daughter he didn't even know he had at first, of course, because in the past he did it with everyone who found the dressing rooms after his concerts.
