She-Hulk: Attorney at Law - Season 1

It goes without saying that one would hire a lawyer in the event of a dispute. But what do you do if you are someone with superpowers? Marvel offers the solution. If someone annoys you incredibly: report to She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

In Marvel Studios' She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany, Orphan Black) has a complicated life. She is a single, thirty-year-old lawyer who specializes in superhuman litigation, but also a green, seven-foot-tall and super-strong Hulk.

Jennifer Walters is sitting in the car catching up with her cousin Bruce – the Hulk – Banner (Mark Ruffalo, I Know This Much Is True). Then they have an accident, and Jennifer comes into contact with Bruce's blood, which causes her to inherit his superpowers. Bruce knows better than anyone what this can mean for your personal life. He decides to help her control her tantrums.

After some time, Jennifer resumes her old life as a lawyer. She assumes that she will no longer transform into her alter ego She-Hulk. During a session in court Titania (Jameela Jamil, The Good Place) barges in and Jennifer is forced to change into She-Hulk in public for the first time. She realizes that her life will never be the same again.

The first episode could still entertain me, but the fun diminished with each episode.

I had hoped that Marvel had managed to make a successful series with the character She-Hulk, but unfortunately, the opposite is true for me. Let me start on a positive note by praising Marvel for approaching the series in an original way. It would have been very easy to make an action series with this character in which She-Hulk could have gone completely wild.

Instead, it has become a combination of drama and comedy. I don't think this comes across at all. Even if you manage to discover the common thread in the series, it will still be a confused succession of episodes.

The first episode could still entertain me, but the fun diminished with each episode. At one point Jennifer jokingly says to the viewers that this is her series, isn't it? In the series, it is meant as a joke, but there feels to be some seriousness in this joke.

I sometimes got the idea that the series has become a platform for cameos of fun or beloved characters. As a result, She-Hulk itself gets a bit snowed under in certain episodes and therefore lacks coherence between episodes. Characters supporting Jennifer aren't worth mentioning, and finally, She-Hulk's CGI has been heavily commented on. The quality could have been better, but I didn't find that disturbing.

There are certainly bright spots to be mentioned. For example, I think that the negatives of the series are absolutely not due to the leading actress. She puts in a great acting performance and, in my opinion, is well cast as Jennifer Walters. She has a good sense of humor and while breaking the fourth wall (looking into the camera and communicating directly with the viewer) you as a viewer often smirk during these moments.

In addition, Marvel is to be commended for daring to make fun of themselves and having sufficient self-mockery. Finally, there are various cameos throughout the series that provide fun moments and are often the highlight of an episode.

I myself got very excited about the character being reintroduced toward the end of the series. It is a diabolical dilemma for me not to spoil the name, but the attentive viewer has already seen this character in the trailer.

The recent Marvel series have been underperforming as far as I'm concerned and She-Hulk is no exception. If Marvel continues this trend, it doesn't bode well for the future. I then fear the worst for the once-acclaimed cinematic universe. Nevertheless, I hold high hopes for Marvel's next new project: Secret Invasion. I hope for both Marvel and us that this series will not disappoint. It probably won't be the cast.
