Sherlock - Season 1

Everybody has heard of Sherlock Holmes. He has become extremely popular again over the last few years. If it’s not because of the two films from Guy Ritchie, then it’s because of this TV series from the BBC, written by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss… which takes place in present-day London!

The first season consists of 3 episodes, each lasts 1.5 hours. Because of this, you get the feeling you’re watching a movie instead of a TV series since there is more than enough time to build a good story line. The story is told at a rapid speed and the 90 minutes fly by without it feeling rushed. Although the three episodes are separate stories, there is a common theme in this season and different elements and characters from the first episode are also present in the following ones. For example, Holmes and Watson usually get their assignments from Inspector Lestrade. The landlady Ms. Hudson, Holmes’ brother Mycroft and his biggest enemy Jim Moriarty are also returning characters.

The series takes place in modern-day London, which means that Sherlock Holmes (brilliantly played by Benedict Cumberbatch) and his sidekick Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman) are able to use modern technology to solve cases. Quite often we see Sherlock use his mobile phone and also Watson keeping a blog during the season.

But Watson is not only Sherlock’s sidekick, they are also room-mates. Dr. John Watson is in fact an army doctor who has just returned from Afghanistan and is looking for cheap living space. In the first episode he gets introduced to someone who wants to share accommodation and costs: Sherlock Holmes. Eventually they live together at famous 221B Baker Street.

It is nice to see that, while Sherlock and Watson are complete opposites, they complement each other perfectly. The arrogant and sometimes hard to follow Sherlock opposite the somewhat reserved Watson provide hilarious situations, in which Watson is mostly the victim of Sherlock’s sarcastic remarks. But one second later and one has to save the other one's life…

That mix of humour, action and a good dose of mystery makes this series worthwhile. Also, taking into account the powerful acting and the different beautiful locations and flashy camera work makes it worth it.
People who still view the Sherlock Holmes' stories as old-fashioned, will be disappointed. Sherlock has been transformed into a modern action hero who likes to help the police solve difficult cases. His ability to see connections and solve mysteries with the help of the smallest details and his room-mate and sidekick Dr. John Watson are his most important resources.

Sherlock – season 1 ends in a thrilling cliffhanger which makes me extremely curious for season 2!
