Shooter (2016) - Season 2

As Netflix continues to release new episodes of the third season each week (it's almost like a real television channel!), I look back at the second season of Shooter, which was originally broadcast on USA Network. The first season involved a conspiracy, where the highly effective military sharpshooter Bob Lee Swagger (Ryan Phillippe, Damages) was framed for killing a foreign president. This storyline took place over ten episodes, and at the end it was properly concluded, but as it turns out in the second season, there are still some loose ends.

When Swagger and his wife, Julie (Shantel VanSanten, One Tree Hill), find themselves in Germany, being honoured alongside other Afghanistan veterans, someone attempts to kill them. Bob Lee Swagger soon figures out that a person is hunting his old team. When it turns out that a certain Chechen sniper, Solotov, is involved, it becomes even more personal for Bob Lee.

In this season, the paths of Isaac Johnson (Omar Epps, House M.D.) and Bob Lee cross once again. As an old teammate of Bob Lee, it is also in his own interest to figure out who is targeting them. Besides that, his wife was killed in a previous attempt on his life. In the end, both men decide to work together to capture the ruthless and nearly invisible Solotov.

I thought that the second season of Shooter was even beter than the first.

I thought that the second season of Shooter was even better than the first. The pace is a lot higher and the action is way more exciting. It's also a good thing that the show's creators make the number of episodes depend on how many are needed to conclude the story. The first season has ten episodes, the second has eight episodes and the third will have thirteen episodes. There are quite a few flashbacks to Afghanistan, dilemmas that soldiers have to face and decisions that had to be made. It is also shown how the homefront has its own struggles with war.

The show is shot in several locations. The season begins in Germany, then moves to Mexico and it ends in Texas. The pace is very high and this leads to several quick, but sometimes less believable plot twists. This season lays the foundation for the plot of the third season, which is a nice detail for the loyal viewers.

The acting is very good. Main actor Ryan Phillippe is also the producer of the show and he is very convincing as an ex-marine. Nadine Memphis (Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Spartacus), the FBI agent who chases Bob Lee in the first season, fortunately returns to the show. A neat detail is that the main actor in the movie, Mark Wahlberg, also serves as an executive producer. The guest characters are great in this season.

Sometimes you shouldn't overthink it and just go with what is happening on the screen.

Josh Stewart (Third Watch and Criminal Minds) masterfully portrays a cool Solotov and I thought the role of Harry Hamlin (LA Law) was wonderfully sinister.

The second season of Shooter is a decent addition to the series. Sometimes you shouldn't overthink it and just go with what is happening on the screen. The action scenes are well shot, the cast diverse and all in all it is very entertaining.
