Sleepy Hollow - Pilot
From the moment Ichabod Crane wakes up in a voodoo-like environment in a cave, trips and is then almost hit by cars and a truck, you know this Ichabod is different from the one portrayed by Johnny Depp in the film with the same name. His long, flowing hair, his body and his facial expressions are completely different from those of Johhny Depp. This Ichabod reminded me of a though knight. At the beginning of the episode, ‘Sympathy for the Devil’ by the Rolling Stones is played in the background and I immediately knew: this could be a very good show.
At the same time Ichabod awakens, police officer Abbie Mills witnesses the murder of her colleague. He is decapitated in a stable by a headless man, who flees the crime scene on horseback. This moment sets the mood for the rest of the show: bloody, exciting, dark and a smudging of the paranormal. To me, the headless man was a source of laughter on several occasions. The way he moves seems to indicate he can see, and the way he stashes his axe on his backs continues to be an odd experience.
Tom Mison (‘Parade’s End’) and Nicole Beharie (‘The Good Wife’) are cast brilliantly as Ichabod Crane and Abbie Mills! From the moment they meet, you know these two are a match made in heaven. Ichabod’s astonished look when he finds out that women can be cops and, even worse, that they wear trousers is hilarious, and Ichabod’s ignorance is endearing. All kinds of things we take for granted are new to him. During the 250 years he was asleep, a lot has changed in the world.
Even though Ichabod Crane passes a lie-detector test (after which he’s told that his side won the war), it’s decided he should be locked-up in an asylum. And Abbie’s the one who has to take him there. As you can imagine, things come up and they never make it to the asylum. Abbie is a confident woman, who wants to make a career for herself and wants to go to the FBI Academy. Because of certain events from her past, it’s easier for Abbie to belief Ichabod’s story. Her past is presented through flashbacks.
Ichabod’s wife, Katrina (Katia Winter, ‘Dexter’), was burned as a witch in 1792. She appears to Ichabod in a dream, in which she explains the plot of the show. You can feel the love between Katrina and Ichabod and the sorrow they feel because they have to spend their lives apart from each other is almost tangible. She tells Ichabod why he woke up and how he is connected to the headless horseman. The headless horseman is only one of four horsemen, who together want to bring hell on earth. It’s up to Ichabod and Annie to prevent the headless horseman from waking the other three.
‘Sleepy Hollow’ is a likely candidate to be renewed for a second season. It has everything a television series should have; excitement, humor, the occasional fright, good vs evil and two people having to work together to fight this evil. Hopefully they will pay more attention to humor in the rest of the season, but also to the finish of the show. At the moment, some things are rushed through, making it difficult to stay focused. I’ll continue to watch ‘Sleepy Hollow’, because I am curious as to how the story will progress, but sometimes it makes me feel like I’ve lost my head.
