Star Trek: Discovery - Season 1

The title music already indicates it towards the ending, this show is an homage to the very first Star Trek show, but with its own modern design.

The crisp footage, the Discovery's technology and those very exciting action scenes. It doesn't entirely fit into the original Star Trek series. Where Enterprise decided to

turn down the tone and the colour palette, this show decided to impress its viewers with present-day technology.

The Discovery is an experimental ship. Its technology is way ahead in comparison to other ships of the same time, which is just before the original Star Trek. The federation requires this ship, as the Klingons are on a rampage.

Main character and federation officer Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green, The Walking Dead) single-handedly causes the conflict to escalate. As a consequence her captain dies, so she is relieved from active duty and the Klingons engage in a bitter struggle. Not just against the Federation, but also amongst themselves.

Star Trek: Discovery is not convincing yet. The series struggles through a number of relationships. Michael, who's raised as a Vulcan, doesn't feel a lot of emotions, but all of a sudden she does. Especially towards Ash Tyler (Shazad Latif, Penny Dreadfull), who's been picked up by the Discovery after being in a Klingon prison for a long time. When it is revealed that he carries a dark secret, his relationship with Michael is put to the test.

The relationship Michael had with her previous and currently deceased captain, Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh, Marco Polo), is comparable to that of a mother and a daughter. This will have some interesting consequences in the latter part of the first season. Captain Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs, The OA), who leads The Discovery, appears to have his own reasons as to why he has a special connection with Michael.

This remains a mystery for quite some time, but once it does become clear, the season has reached its peak. For a brief moment the show seems to relive the glory days of the original series.

Once Discovery makes its way into a different dimension, the story doesn't necessarily get any better.

There was a bit of a spark, but the show hasn't fully ignited yet.

The characters seem to find themselves superior in the 'we make decisions together' and 'look how benevolent we are' way. The question as to why generals and captains are required for the federation to be successful is justified.

Star Trek: Discovery is a fun show, but it lacks the power of the other Star Trek series that came before. They also took some time to really get going. Besides that, each show suffers from lesser episodes.

Star Trek: Discovery is therefore not yet written off, but it has to improve if it really wants to generate more enthusiasm. There was a bit of a spark, but the show hasn't fully ignited yet.
