Star Wars: The Clone Wars - The complete series

Star Wars: The Clone Wars is a worthy expansion of the Star Wars universe. Even though it is aimed towards a younger audience, this animated series isn't childish at all and is, in fact, suitable for Star Wars fans of all ages.

Just like the majority of the MySeries members, I have enjoyed The Mandalorian over the past two years. Especially the second season made me more curious about the expanded Star Wars universe. Over the past few years, several animated series, comics, books and games were released that highlighted events that are part of the official Star Wars canon. One of these animated series is Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which shows the events that took place between the movies Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.

In between these two films, there is a gap of three years in which the Clone Wars took place. On one side there is the Galactic Republic, which has a clone army and Jedi knights. They take on the droid army of the Separatists, which are led by the mysterious evil Sith. Viewers get to see the course of events during this war through the eyes of various inhabitants of the Star Wars universe. In particular, we follow Jedi knights Anakin Skywalker (Matt Lanter, 90210), Obi-Wan Kenobi (James Arnold Taylor, Johnny Test) and Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein, That's So Raven).

The Star Wars universe is enormous, and over the course of seven seasons, a lot can be shown. And that's exactly what Star Wars: The Clone Wars does. Episodes take place in different places, some planets are known, others are entirely new. The stories of the episodes and the characters differ greatly. In some episodes, we see infiltration missions, massive space fights, exciting chases or epic lightsaber duels. But there are also episodes that revolve around peace negotiations, diplomatic missions or even clone soldiers that follow a training programme. The latter I personally found more interesting than the space fights.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars expands the universe.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars takes place during the timeline of the prequel films. When these could be seen in movie theatres, people weren't all that excited. Points of criticism were shallow characters, endless talking instead of cool fights and there was way too much CGI. As this is an animated series, there's not much that can be done about the amount of animation. But due to this series, the storyline of the prequel films was improved and expanded upon.

For example, the transition of Anakin to the dark side is a lot smoother and more natural. The background characters receive a lot more attention and character development. We also get to meet some of the best Star Wars characters outside the movies, such as Jedi apprentice Ahsoka, clone commander Rex (Dee Bradley Baker, Phineas and Ferb) and the dark warrior Asajj Ventress (Nika Futterman, American Dad). It is a bit of a shame that the fate of some characters is already revealed due to the movies. It does remove a bit of the tension, as you already know who's going to die and when.

Even though the target audience is young, the series isn't childish.

Naturally, this is an animated series, which usually means it is aimed towards children and young viewers. As expected, it isn't childish at all. Just like Avatar: The Last Airbender, more adult themes such as death, war, politics and the grey area between right and wrong are dealt with. It can actually be quite violent. This ensures that the series is also entertaining for more mature Star Wars fans. However, in the beginning, the series doesn't seem to know what kind of atmosphere to create. Starting from the second season, they manage to balance it. The longer-running storylines that are more present from that point on also add to that.

Yes, it is an animated series, but that doesn't mean it's a series for kids. Star Wars: The Clone Wars doesn't just fill the void between two Star Wars movies, it also expands upon the existing universe. Over the course of seven seasons, there are plenty of exciting adventures. After Star Wars: The Clone Wars, various other animated series were released, including Star Wars: Rebels, which takes place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. This May, a spin-off called Star Wars: The Bad Batch is scheduled to premiere. The latter revolves around a group of mutated clone soldiers in the aftermath of the clone wars. I am looking forward to that.
