Stargate: Origins - First episode
Stargate: Origins is a web series, and each episode lasts for about ten minutes. After Stargate: SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis and the 'flopped' Stargate: Universe a decision has been made to return the franchise to the small screen in such a way that it can't flop, with very short episodes.
The question that every Stargate fan will ask is 'why do they have to be so short?'. I do not yet have an answer, but the creators are probably still figuring out if people are still interested in the Stargate franchise. Stargate Command, a streaming website, will ask you to purchase a membership that costs €20,- (one time fee) and once you've done that, you'll be able to watch all episodes, including those of the older series.
As the episodes are only ten minutes in length, I will not talk a lot about the content. Stargate Command has decided to make the first three episodes available at the same time, so I will talk about those three as if they were a single episode.
The story takes place before SG-1, but if it's a prequel or an unrelated story is as of yet not entirely clear. It also isn't clear if this series actually takes place in the previously established 'Stargate universe' or if it's separate. Katherine Langford (Ellie Gall) is researching the Stargate alongside her father Paul Langford (Connor Trinneer, who portrayed Michael in Stargate: Atlantis) and that's pretty much the story of the first three episodes.
Honestly, the acting isn't that great. There are a couple of Nazis played by actors who should go back to drama school. I, however, don't think that they are a big part of the story and thus it's not that big of a deal.
Stargate: Origins does have some potential, but for it to become actually good, the episodes have to be a lot longer than ten minutes. The Stargate franchise still has a huge fanbase and as a result of that I think that even Origins will become a hit.

To properly assess this show is something that I find fairly difficult. I've now seen 30 minutes worth of content and the show does breathe Stargate, it's only way too short. If the creators want to turn this show into a true ratings blockbuster, then they'll have to increase the episode length to at least 45 minutes. Something I, as a big Stargate fan, would only encourage.Stargate: Origins does have some potential.
