Stranger Things - Season 2
It was a big hit in 2016, Stranger Things. The science-fiction show, which is made by Netflix and takes place in the eighties, revived the career of Golden Globe winner Winona Ryder (The Age of Innocence), broke several records and was nominated twice at the Golden Globes of 2017.
After I became a part of the top 24 users of Gold Derby, which is all about predicting the Golden Globe winners, I was asked to write an article about the show that I considered to be the potential winner. My choice was Stranger Things. There was only one problem: I hadn't yet seen the show. I watched the show straight away and I was sold almost immediately. Within four days I had seen every episode of the amazing and successful first season.
The question is whether the second season is or isn't capable of reaching that same level of quality. With the way Netflix releases shows, which is by placing a full season on the internet, the binge-watchers among us were soon able to answer that question.
The second season, which is also known as Stranger Things 2, continues where season one ended. After only a short while the city of Hawkins is (once again) endangered by horrors from below.
One group of children has to save the town, being lead by a mysterious girl known as Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown). The sheriff of the town, Jim Hopper (David Harbour, Banshee) also tries to make sure that the small Indiana town turns back into a safe haven.
The Duffer Brothers, who created the show, once again display their skill set by bringing intense scenes to the screen, which take the viewers to the edge of their seats. The episodes fly by and remain interesting during the entire season.
The success of this show is derived from its beautiful sets, which takes you back to an era that appears to be a lot longer ago than it actually was. There's also a great amount of incredible music, which sets the tone for each and every scene. Its success is, however, mainly due to its cast. Not only do the makers of the show know how to fully utilize the qualities of their young cast members (Finn Wolfhard, who could also be seen in It, Millie Bobbie Brown, who is praised a lot, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb Mclaughlin, Noah Schnapp and as of this season also Sadie Sink), but also David Harbour, Winona Ryder and rising star Dacre Montgomery have been cast perfectly.
Where many shows seem to fail to uphold its quality during next seasons, Stranger Things has instead succeeded.
We can only wait and see if the third (previously announced) season manages to bring more of the same, but with this cast and crew that should not be a difficult task.
