Drama series Suits LA canceled after one season

NBC's Stephen Amell-starring legal drama Suits LA has come to an end.
Suits LA is a spin-off of the long-running USA Network series Suits. Given the high-profile IP involved, NBC had high expectations for Suits creator Aaron Korsh. Those expectations were never met: after a decent premiere, ratings for the spin-off, which airs Sunday, have been low.

NBC and Korsh went to great lengths to bring back popular original cast members to play with the new cast. Among them were Gabriel Macht, who reprised the role of Harvey Specter in a three-episode arc, Rick Hoffman as the eccentric Louis Litt, and David Costabile as Daniel Hardman.

In an effort to gain more viewers, NBC also ran a Thursday night schedule of Suits LA with a three-hour marathon rerun on March 27.

There were some minor changes in weekly ratings here and there, but overall viewership remained low, hovering around 1 million on linear Live+Same Day in recent weeks. The series also failed to become a major streaming hit, despite the recent revival of Suits on Netflix, which prompted NBC to order a spinoff in the first place.

Eventually, it became clear that Suits LA had been rejected by fans and that it would take a major marketing effort to bring them back, even as the series improved creatively throughout the season and moved closer to the original in tone.

This is now the second Suits spinoff to run for a single season, following USA Network’s Pearson.

Suits LA centers on Ted Black (Stephen Amell), a former New York federal prosecutor who has reinvented himself by representing the most powerful clients in Los Angeles. His firm is in crisis, and to survive he must embrace a role he has treated with disdain his entire career.

It was a tough day for NBC, which must make room in its schedule for basketball coverage next season under NBCUniversal’s $2.5 billion-a-year deal with the NBA. Suits LA joins dramas The Irrational and Found and comedies Night Court (2023) and Lopez vs. Lopez, which have also been canceled.
