Suits - Season 3

Suits is a good show. It’s even one of my favorite TV series. However, as a viewer, and most certainly as a reviewer, I think you should have an objective view. And yes, even my favorite show has some "bad" elements. I’ve noticed that my fellow fans and I are too charmed by the fast-paced smooth way of talking of Harvey (Gabriel Macht, ‘Spin City’) and Mike (Patrick J Adams, ‘Friday Night Lights’), the nice business suits, and the pop culture references in the dialogue. If you put that aside and you take a good look at the bigger picture, you’ll see that this is what the show relies on and is a nice cover up.

In this season, the show focuses on, among other things, the case between Ava Hessington and Hessington Oil. Pearson/Hardman has merger plans and that is when the viewer’s meet Harvey’s British counterpart and when Donna (Sarah Rafferty, ‘Bones’) develops into more than just Harvey’s voice of reason. The relationship between Mike and Rachel also grows during this season, as does the bond between Harvey and Scottie. Moreover, Louis (Rick Hoffman, ‘Samantha Who’) has a possibility for happiness and the law office undergoes a metamorphosis. Of course, Mike’s fraud has not been forgotten and comes up in a nasty way.

Harvey and Mike have a courtroom fight every episode but unfortunately most cases aren’t very significant. Suits’ biggest problem is that there is never a lot at stake, even though the show pretends there is. If you analyze the separate cases (especially in the separate episodes) you’ll arrive at the following conclusion: the office is confronted with a threat, the first half of the episode the show creates an environment where it could be that Mike and Harvey go down but then, because of Mike (or sometimes Louis) being a smarty pants, everything is solved easily.

You never have the feeling that the office, Mike and Harvey, will lose. And that takes all excitement and urgency out of the show. The threat that is created in the show is never realistic, which removes all tension for the viewer. Of course, the great dialogue and the good acting are still there, but that is not enough to keep the show going. Therefore, as a show, one should add drama and conflict to unravel the protagonists. However, for that to work, the viewer has to be invested in the relationships that are involved in the drama. But unfortunately Mike/Rachel and Harvey/Scottie aren’t my cup of tea.

So, then all you’ll get is a lot of romantic problems which are not very interesting. Mostly because, for instance, Scottie is played by a guest actor and you already know how that ends. Only the chemistry between the actors and the overall good acting (Donna and Louis remain the best actors in the show), is what keeps it afloat. The show is still good but is becoming more and more repetitive and predictable. Please make sure that in the fourth season both Donna and Jessica have bigger roles than just ‘the voice of reason’ and ‘the strict boss’. Harvey’s character has already developed into a more vulnerable person than the shallow one he was before, which helps a lot.

Something that is nice to see on the other hand is that during the season the crew starts to operate more as a family, like the show is saying: ‘if you attack one of us, you attack all of us’. I can definitely appreciate the sentiment and the low angle shot in the season finale in which Louis, Harvey and Mike are walking back to the office after a heavy court battle, is impressive. Suits is shot in smooth fast moving images which is used to give the men in the show, despite their faults, a hero like status; this still works very well.

In the final episodes of this third season, Mike’s fraud is back in the picture and the final conclusion may provide a nice fresh angle for the coming season. If you ask me, Mike’s choice is the best thing that could happen to Suits. I think that the shows’ developers also acknowledge that it is time to shuffle the deck and turn the show around, at least I hope so. There is definitely potential for a fifth and sixth season, but this will require some changes. If not, it will still be good and fun, but in all honesty, also not more than that.
