Sweet Magnolias renewed for a fifth season

Sweet Magnolias renewed for a fifth season

Fans' patience for Sweet Magnolias has been rewarded: Netflix has renewed the romantic drama about a small romantic town.
Sheryl J. Anderson is returning as showrunner for season five. The news comes more than two and a half months after the release of season four.

Unlike previous renewals, this time around likely wasn’t so easy, as the normally reliable crowd-pleaser series spent just two weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10 for English-language series with its fourth season, peaking at #4. There have been series with similar feats that have been canceled by the streamer.

Billed by Netflix as a “comfort drama,” Sweet Magnolias is based on the book series by Sherryl Woods and follows lifelong best friends Maddie (Joanna Garcia Swisher), Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott), and Helen (Heather Headley) as they juggle relationships, families, and careers in the charming town of Serenity, South Carolina.

Season five, which Netflix did not label as final in its renewal announcement, picks up after a turbulent season four finale that ended with multiple cliffhangers, the biggest of which was Maddie’s impending move to New York for a job in publishing.

“Can anything end the Magnolias?! Our ladies have seen each other through bigger challenges than physical distance,” Anderson told Deadline in an interview after the release of Season 4. “When you love someone, you want what’s best for them and want to help them reach that goal. True friends celebrate each other in times of victory, embolden each other to seize their passion, and then link arms to figure out logistics.”
