Disney+ Cancels Star Wars Series The Acolyte after One Season

Disney+ Cancels Star Wars Series The Acolyte after One Season

Lucasfilm has decided not to move forward with a second season of The Acolyte starring Amandla Stenberg.
The announcement comes more than a month after the eight-episode first season of the series from creator, director, executive producer and showrunner Leslye Headland wrapped on Disney+.

The news isn’t entirely surprising. The Acolyte performed well with critics, with a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, but divided Star Wars fans, which was reflected in its ratings.

The Acolyte

The Acolyte got off to a strong start when it debuted on June 4 with two episodes. It generated 4.8 million views in its first day on the streamer, making it the biggest series premiere on Disney+ this year.

Views rose to 11.1 million worldwide after five days of streaming. According to Disney data, the series debuted at No. 7 on the Nielsen Top 10 Originals chart the week of its premiere (488 million minutes watched) and rose to No. 6 the following week.

But The Acolyte couldn’t maintain its momentum, dropping out of the Top 10 in its third week and staying away before returning to No. 10 after the release of its finale (335 million minutes watched, believed to be the lowest for a Star Wars series finale).

Like fellow global streamers Netflix and Prime Video, Disney+ has a high viewership threshold for renewing big-budget series that cost more than $100M per season to make.

Headland has revealed in interviews that she has floated her ideas for a second season and shared her hopes for a renewal.

Lucasfilm’s first — and most successful — Disney+ series, The Mandalorian, is moving forward, making the leap to feature films with the upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu. Ahsoka, the series that followed The Acolyte, has been renewed for a second season.

The Acolyte was a mystery-thriller that took viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark forces in the final days of the High Republic. A former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes, but the forces they face are more sinister than they ever imagined.

In addition to Stenberg, the cast included Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, Jodie Turner-Smith, Dafne Keen, Rebecca Henderson, Charlie Barnett, Dean-Charles Chapman, and Carrie-Anne Moss.

It was to be expected, the series itself is reasonable but has nothing to do with Star Wars, unfortunately I expected more.

It almost seems to be a law that when critics are enthusiastic about something, the public will ignore it. I have had the idea for some time that critics mainly want to air their own erudition and politically correct taste and actually have no idea anymore what appeals to or likes "the common man".

And Disney may now realize that if you milk long enough, the udder will dry up. There is simply too much content in too short a time. And much of it is barely related to Star Wars. As Dennis said above. The same can be said of the Star Trek franchise...

What many people forget is that critics have no influence on whether or not a series is well received.

"The critics don't matter. There aren't enough critics to make an audience therefore the audience is the one that matters."

That is only partly true. There are quite a few people who, before they start something, first look at what 'people' think of it. And sometimes they really go by what they read in the reviews and it may be that they don't even start.
It's better to look at the Audience score on Rotten Tomatoes or IMDB, for example. But not many people do that...
So The Critics can indeed ensure that there is no Audience.
You see that now with Borderlands for example. A pretty decent popcorn movie, but completely written into the ground and hardly anyone comes to see it...

That film has a 53% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 4.3 rating on IMDB, and of the 269 reviews, 174 gave it a 5 or lower, so I don't think that's a very strong argument.

Well, in this case it is mainly because it is another game film adaptation and the gamers are disappointed. And those nerds are usually quite outspoken on the Interwebs. That is what I see in any case. I do not know the game (of course) and see the film without any further baggage. And I enjoyed myself very much. It is not a top film, but in my eyes it is a good enough.

Well, I have mixed feelings about that.

If those who played the games tell me the movie is not good, then there is a big chance that I will not watch it either. The fact that Kevin Hart is in it does not help because I find him annoying, but that is besides the point. The movie is made for those who played the game, otherwise you would not attach the name Borderlands to it. Then the movie can still be good for outsiders, but you will attract fewer viewers anyway.

This also happens with the Star Wars and LotR movies and series. The chance that a random person who has never seen anything from Star Wars or LotR will probably not watch it.

Star Wars has always functioned best with few films and lots of books, comics, games and other story-driven merchandise
Disney may have been the only and right organization to purchase Star Wars in the role of curator, but narratively (entertainment wise) they've missed the mark with this franchise
What I hope is that they don't go the same route with Star Wars as they did with the Muppets, who were also bought at the time to preserve and keep the franchise alive, but who don't really know how to deal with it
