In the second season, the friends struggled with love, jealousy, motherhood, and societal constraints. Nan, now the Duchess of Tintagel, was torn between her husband Theo (Guy Remmers) and her true love Guy (Matthew Broome), Theo’s best friend.
The finale ended with Theo's decision to step down as duke, marry Lizzy, and leave Nan behind — pregnant, a secret only known to Lizzy. According to creator Katherine Jakeways, Nan now has "complete freedom to choose her own path."
For the third season, the creative team is not only continuing to develop the storylines of the returning characters but also looking for a new antagonist: Kit, Theo's secret illegitimate half-brother, who was summoned in the finale to become the new duke.
The Buccaneers — which combines lavish costume drama with modern pop music, including tracks from Taylor Swift — received rave reviews (72% on Rotten Tomatoes) and has a loyal fan base. Although the series has not yet achieved a breakthrough in viewership, its popularity continues to grow steadily.
Jakeways reacted enthusiastically to the renewal: "We can't wait to lace up our corsets again and run over the cliffs of Tintagel to discover what passionate adventures our beloved Buccaneers will embark on next."
The cast of the second season also included Christina Hendricks, Leighton Meester, Mia Threapleton, Grace Ambrose, Maria Almeida, Amelia Bullmore, Fenella Woolgar, Josh Dylan, Barney Fishwick, Greg Wise, and Jacob Ifan.
