Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney, pictured) discovers that Hal was telling her boss about a “deputy going rogue,” referring to Grace’s involvement in the attack on a British warship that started the series. Hal and his wife, Ambassador Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), discuss the risks of Grace as a “deeply flawed” president, but Kate seems little interested in the political opportunities Grace’s presidency offers.
International tensions quickly rise: British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi) warns Kate that Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) is withholding explosive information, and the Pentagon is shown drawing up “war plans with the United Kingdom.”
At one point, Kate says, “I’m doing everything I can, but there’s a limit,” while Trowbridge responds, “I expected more from you.” The trailer shows that the situation in the White House and on the global stage is becoming increasingly complex, with even Billie’s (Nana Mensah) warning, “You should get a lawyer,” adding to the tension.
The third season consists of eight episodes and revolves around the dynamics of Kate Wyler facing political power, moral choices, and international crises. She has just accused Vice President Grace Penn of a terrorist plot and is now pursuing the position of vice president herself, while her husband Hal may have been inadvertently involved in the president’s death. Meanwhile, Kate develops complex relationships with Austin Dennison and First Gentleman Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford).
The cast is further complemented by Ali Ahn, Ato Essandoh, Celia Imrie, and Miguel Sandoval. Netflix has already renewed the series for a fourth season. The third season is available for streaming from October 16.
