The Diplomat (US) - Season 2

The second season of The Diplomat (US) is again very strong.
On October 31, 2024, the second season of The Diplomat (US) was released on Netflix. For fans, it was a long wait, because the first season ended with a big cliffhanger in April 2023. The Diplomat (US) revolves around the American ambassador Kate Wyler (Keri Russell, The Americans) in London, who is confronted with various intrigues there. Kate is ambitious, but her husband Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell, The Man in the High Castle) is that squared. With his network, his strategic insight and sometimes ruthless actions, he tries to bring Kate to even greater heights in her career.

The second season continues the dramatic developments from the first season. A British aircraft carrier has been attacked in the Persian Gulf, killing more than forty British marines. The big question is: who is behind the attack? At first it seemed to be Iran and then Russia, now it seems to be the Russian mercenary Lenkov. The hunt for the person(s) who ordered the attack is then opened.

British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear, Penny Dreadful) is a politician who is always in action mode

British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear, Penny Dreadful) is a politician who is always in action mode. The culprits must be found immediately and presented to his electorate dead rather than alive. His advisor, Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi, Carnival Row) is a bit more cautious and prefers to include Kate Wyler and European allies in the operations. Of course, he also has his own (political) agenda. The first season ended with a large bomb explosion in which several people were hit.

The second season consists of six episodes this time. This makes it even more attractive to watch the episodes in one or two evenings in a row. The story really invites you to do so. Each episode is exciting, has various plot twists and intrigues and you are really drawn into the story as a viewer. Each episode ends with a nice cliffhanger.

Without telling anything about the content of the plot, I had the feeling in the first episode that the developments were very far-fetched and not really credible. But that feeling changed very quickly in the second episode. It is really strong how the writers have built up the story in this second series of episodes.

This season focuses less on the exciting marital relationship between the two Wylers, but more on the strategic actions of the couple, the sharp dialogues and the unraveling of the mystery. And that is still against the background of the intrigues within the walls of the White House, where President William Rayburn (Michael McKean, Better Call Saul) seems to be looking for a successor to his current Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney, Masters of Sex).

Keri Russell plays her role with verve again and, just like for the first season, she is also nominated for a Golden Globe for best actress in a drama series. The series is nominated for best drama series, and Allison Janney also has a nomination to be picked for her supporting role as Vice President. On January 6, 2025 it will become clear whether they win any awards. The Diplomat (US) remains highly recommended and the third season has already been announced by Netflix.
