The End of the F***ing World - season 1

Because this show is often compared to 13 Reasons Why and I really liked that show, I decided to give The End of the F***ing World a chance. I didn't really know what to expect, but I did hope that this would be another show which I could binge-watch my way through.

The 17-year-old James (Alex Lawther, Black Mirror) prefers to be alone and has a feeling that he may be a psychopath. When he was younger he stuck his hand into a deep fryer just to feel something and while he's at school he likes to observe people and choose whom he'd like to kill. Alyssa (Jessica Bardem, Penny Dreadful), who's also seventeen years old, stumbles across James. She thinks that people often act fake and that James is one of the few who doesn't and thus she decides that they should run off together. James likes being alone with her, as that provides him with the chance to kill her. The two manage to steal the car of James's dad and they drive off. While they're escaping, James starts to feel right. Maybe this is because of Alyssa and do these feelings change James's plan to kill her?

It took me half a season to get used to this show. Often I wanted to stop watching. In the beginning I hardly felt anything for the characters. I was annoyed by many things, such as the ridiculous behaviour of the two and the show's somewhat unbelievable action. This continued on, until the show arrived at a certain point, which makes it so that you actually feel some compassion for James and Alyssa. There's also a massive plot twist. Eventually the good outweighed the bad.

Season 1 consists of only 8 episodes, with each episode taking 20 minutes or so. This made sure that I could keep going on. It doesn't take a long time to get through all of it, which sort of makes the entire show feel a bit sloppy. But, besides the bad things, I will still give this show a solid 7. I am actually curious to see how the show will evolve and what more is in store, especially because of the way the first season ends.
