The Expanse - Season 6

The crew of the Rocinante face difficult choices in a war involving all sides. A smashing season finale that unfortunately also marks the end of The Expanse.
Earth and Mars are no longer the almost invincible military superpowers they once were. Marco Innaros outsmarts them time and time again and he deals sensitive blows. The Earthlings in particular will have a harder time than ever before. At the same time, cracks are also appearing in the once staunch military community on Mars.

The path of total war chosen by Marco goes too far for many Belters.

Typical for The Expanse is that the political and human side is never forgotten. Big and small problems are organically intertwined. Victory and defeat follow each other and not everyone will make it to the end.

Marco remains Marco, but he is still disappointed that not all Belters are behind him. His chosen path of all-out war goes too far for many. Yet many Belters do not choose the other side either. The distrust of Earth and Mars is too great to join them and build a combined strike force. Old friendships and feuds are broken or renewed. A time of difficult personal choices has arrived.

Marco's command is increasingly resembling a dictatorship. Meanwhile, the relationship between Marco and his son Filip is also under pressure. He is weighed down by his conscience and he is faced with a choice that he is still too young to make. The way in which Marco manages, is offensive to Filip. At the same time, he desperately longs for the paternal appreciation of his Marco.

The problem, however, is that Marco himself has not known a father. He has no idea how to treat his son other than as a crew member. Of course, sometimes he favors Filip. However, that seems mainly to not lose face. Their relationship comes under even greater strain when Filip captures an acquaintance. And that's just one of many storylines emerging this season. The struggles of the other parties are also discussed in detail.

I've been a fan of The Expanse since the first few episodes. This series is truly one of the best I've seen in years. The backstory, which seemed like just the wallpaper of the series in the beginning of Season 1, eventually turns out to be the main story.

The characters choose their own path, true to their character and principles. That sometimes leads to painful scenes.

The relationship between Earth and Mars and the outer planets – where the Belters live – is what it's all about. The motivations of the characters are 'real-world' choices. By that I mean they are almost always logical and understandable. The characters choose their own path, true to their character and principles. That sometimes leads to painful scenes.

Of course, the series can't be exactly like the books. To give the story more continuity, several characters from the books have been merged into a number of familiar faces in the television series. As with the Lord of the Rings films, this provides a difference with the books, but at the same time it resulted in a smoother and more understandable story.

That is also the reason why the series has been filmed up to and including book 6 and no further. Later books are also set much later in time. Maybe someday there will be a sequel based on these parts? I wouldn't mind.

For some viewers, The Expanse will seem too slow or too realistic. Not all problems can be solved with violence. And that's not the only thing this series differs from its competitors. Those who do not immediately drop out after a few episodes will recognize a unique series in The Expanse that justifies a second or third viewing. For me this series is still worth a 9.

In fact, Laconia's story was so disconnected from the rest that I actually wonder what to do with it. In addition, it just feels unfinished. This season also feels too short indeed, I think run-down is the right word indeed. A shame, because it all fits together so well. Politically speaking, really great and realistic. Also a number of physics things that are fun to play with, such as gravity.
