Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson), meanwhile, expresses an opposite view: “Some people want to marry for love. I know I do,” she says — to which her aunt Agnes (Christine Baranski) replies, “I don’t understand.” Watch the teaser below.
The season logline for season three of The Gilded Age reads, “Following the Opera War, the old guard is weakened and the Russells stand poised to take their place at the head of society. Bertha sets her sights on a prize that would elevate the family to unimaginable heights while George (Morgan Spector) risks everything on a gambit that could revolutionize the railroad industry — if it doesn’t ruin him first.
Across the street, the Brook household is thrown into chaos as Agnes refuses to accept Ada’s (Cynthia Nixon) new position as lady of the house. Peggy (Denée Benton) meets a handsome doctor from Newport whose family is less than enthusiastic about her career. As all of New York hastens toward the future, their ambition may come at the cost of what they truly hold dear.”
Series creator Julian Fellowes said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that in season three, “What I like to emphasize is that behind the ballrooms and the clothes and the carriages, these giant men with these enormous egos were doing things. They didn’t share our generation’s sentimental view. We like to spend about half of our day in tears for everyone having a terrible time. There is something about their braggadocio that I find rather appealing. It doesn’t mean I’m like them.”
The Gilded Age's expanded cast also includes Harry Richardson, Blake Ritson, Simon Jones, Ben Ahlers, and Jack Gilpin. Season three newcomers include Bill Camp, Merritt Wever, Leslie Uggams, LisaGay Hamilton, Paul Alexander Nolan, Hattie Morahan, Andrea Martin, Jessica Frances Dukes, Phylicia Rashad, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Victoria Clark, and Jordan Donica.
