Premiere date for possible spin-off episode to The Good Doctor

Kennedy McMann and Emmy winner Felicity Huffman guest star in an episode of The Good Doctor, which will then lead to their own series.

ABC has officially ordered an episode of the hit medical drama The Good Doctor entitled "The Good Lawyer". McMann and Huffman will guest star and their characters will be introduced.

Written by co-showrunners David Shore and Liz Friedman and directed by Ruben Fleischer, the episode marks Huffman's (pictured) first acting assignment since serving a short prison sentence for her role in the college admissions scandal nearly three years ago.

In the episode "The Good Lawyer", Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) seeks legal counsel to help him win a case and puts his trust in a promising young lawyer, Joni DeGroot (McMann), who has obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The brilliant, witty, and confident Joni is relatively new to her prestigious law firm when she takes on Shaun's case. Joni lives with OCD and has never wanted to be treated differently. While her symptoms take a toll on her personal and professional life, her attention to detail allows her to see things through a different lens.

McMann (pictured), who has been open about her lifelong battle with OCD, emerged as the best choice for the role in early September. She will play the title role in the CW series Nancy Drew (2019), of which the fourth season will be the last.

Huffman will guest star as Janet Stewart, a highly regarded lawyer and partner at the law firm with a fierce intellect and dry wit. Janet is a seasoned veteran and Dr. Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff) has assisted in several court cases over the years, so he turns to her to represent his beloved protégé. But when Shaun declares that he wants Joni to represent him, Janet is forced to let Joni take charge of the case.

The relationship between Joni and Stewart is a bit like the one between Sean and Glassman in The Good Doctor.

Huffman has a long history at ABC. All three television series in which she has played the lead role have aired on ABC and all three have garnered critical acclaim: the comedy series Sports Night, the dramedy Desperate Housewives, and the drama anthology American Crime. The roles earned Huffman important award nominations, she won an Emmy Award for Desperate Housewives.

Developed by Shore, and based on the Korean series, The Good Doctor is ABC's No. 1 entertainment series in total viewership this season, along with The Rookie. After 35 days of viewing on linear and digital platforms, the series has attracted almost 9.4 million total viewers this season.

The Good Doctor stars Highmore as Shaun, Hill Harper as Dr. Marcus Andrews, Schiff as Glassman, Fiona Gubelmann as Dr. Morgan Reznick, Will Yun Lee as Dr. Alex Park, Christina Chang as Dr. Audrey Lim, Paige Spara as Lea Dilallo, Bria Samoné Henderson as Dr. Jordan Allen and Noah Galvin as Dr. Asher Wolke.

Shore and Friedman co-produce with Daniel Dae Kim, Erin Gunn, Thomas L. Moran, David Hoselton, Peter Blake, Jessica Grasl, Garrett Lerner, Mike Listo, Highmore, Shawn Williamson, David Kim and Sebastian Lee. The series comes from Sony Pictures Television and ABC Signature.
