The Good Doctor season six welcomes Chuku Modu's Dr. Jared Kalu returns for the first time since the second season. Modu was one of the first actors of the series when it premiered in 2017, playing one of the surgical interns under the direction of Dr. Neil Melendez (Nicholas Gonzalez) along with Dr. Claire Browne (Antonia Thomas) and Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore).
However, Kalu was fired for attacking an employee who sexually harassed Dr. Browne. Although he was rehired after suing the hospital, Kalu ultimately chose a new job and left The Good Doctor during season two.
As TVLine reports, Modu (pictured) reprises his role as Dr. Kalu again in the sixth season of The Good Doctor. He will return in the fifteenth episode of The Good Doctor, titled 'Old Friends', eventually appearing in a total of seven episodes. Since the sixth season has 22 episodes, that means Modu's Kalu will stay for the rest of the season. The episode 'Old Friends' will air on ABC on Monday, March 6.
The reason for Kalu's return to The Good Doctor is not given. However, it is not the first character to return to the series after an initial departure. Thomas Dr. Browne and Beau Garrett's Jessica Preston are two other major original characters who left the series. Garrett left after the first season of The Good Doctor, while Thomas left after four seasons. They all seem to have left the series on good terms. Then Garrett surprised viewers with a cameo in season four, while Thomas appeared as a guest star in two episodes of the fifth season of The Good Doctor.
So Modu seems to follow the trend of The Good Doctor welcoming back its departed original cast members. The only difference is that he gets an extended return. This decision to welcome back former stars is a good strategy to boost interest in The Good Doctor. The series has come a long way since its first season and is constantly expanding its cast. But bringing back characters allows the series to pay tribute to the original actors who made it such a success in the first place, and emphasize that their stories still take place elsewhere in The Good Doctor's universe.
