Based on Bernard Cornwell's series of novels The Saxon Stories, the series tells the story of the son of a ninth-century Saxon noble after being kidnapped as a child. The Netflix series follows his journey as he tries to reclaim his family's land.

Variety shared the film's plot:
"Uhtred must once again ride through a broken kingdom with several of the series' beloved returning characters, as they battle alongside and against new allies and foes. After King Edward's death, a battle for the crown ensues, with rival heirs and invaders for power. And when an alliance enlists Uhtred's help in their plans, Uhtred faces a choice between those he cares about most and the dream of building a united England."
