The Letter for the King - Season 1

The Letter for the King is initially based on the Dutch young adult novel of the same name. The Letter for the King was written by Tonke Dragt in 1962 and turned into a Dutch movie in 2008, translated into English in 2013 and now there is the Netflix Original, available worldwide. The series consists of six episodes. I said earlier that this series is initially based on the novel because the series deviates from the original story in a big way. Did you read the book or know the story? Let it go because you can only truly enjoy this series if you completely ignore all your knowledge and feelings you have about the book.

This series is great to watch. But still something rankles...

The series takes place in the 12th century in a world where the northern kingdoms of Unauwen and Dagonaut are at war with their southern neighbour Eviellan. This war was started by the ruthless prince Viridian (Gijs Blom), son of King Favian of Unauwen. He is determined to enhance his powers so he can rule all the kingdoms. So it takes a special kind of hero to fight the darkness that comes with it, but who will be this hero and why?

The main character of this series is a boy called Tiuri (Amir Wilson, His Dark Materials). He was born in Eviellan, but as a baby adopted by a famous knight from the kingdom of Dagonaut. He has grown up to be a genial but not a strong boy. Tiuri has no real ambitions and no desire to become a knight. However, his stepfather wants him to follow in his footsteps, so he is forced to undergo all the tests for becoming a knight. Only with the help of his stepfather, he manages to come through, but the last test will be the hardest. All the squires who passed the previous tests have to spend the night and remain awake in a creepy, remote temple without speaking or leaving.

They are interrupted, however by the arrival of the squire of the legendary and mysterious black knight with the white shield who is gravely injured. The black knight appoints Tiuri to deliver a letter within 14 days to King Favian (Yorick van Wageningen) of Unauwen. This letter is essential in the fight to stop prince Viridian. It will be a hard and dangerous task because many people try to prevent him from delivering this letter to the king. So what follows is an exciting adventure for Tiuri.

On his journey, Tiuri has to face many severe problems and challenges. The red knights of Viridian try to stop him in every way possible. Furthermore, the knights of Unauwen are also after him because they believe he is responsible for killing the black knight with the white shield. Thankfully Tiuri is helped by several different characters to fulfil his task, but despite all the help, it is becoming harder and harder to deliver the letter on time. Will he succeed and will prince Viridian be stopped?

Although a magical element has been added to the series, I still miss the magical feeling I got while reading this exciting book.

Amir Wilson's acting is fine, and I think he portrays this version of Tiuri very well. The rest of the cast also play their roles very well. Still, six episodes is not enough to tell the entire story. There is just not enough time to get to know the characters, there are no definite answers to some crucial questions, and some scenes are quite unrealistic. Don't get me wrong, the story is well structured over these six episodes, but they sometimes lack suspense, and they are not always well executed. You can't say the same about the camera work, the settings and the costumes, which are all amazing and makes this series great to watch. But still, something rankles...

I've told you before to disregard the book, but I still want to address the main differences. Besides the main story, the letter and the names of the main characters and the kingdoms, there is not much left of the original story. The creators added more fantasy and magic; there are more over-the-top scenes and less depth to the dialogues. Tiuri is hardly alone during his adventure, as opposed to the book, and suddenly there are a lot more storylines. Although a magical element has been added to the series, I still miss the magical feeling I got while reading this exciting book. The Letter for the King is just a nice series to watch while we all have to stay at home. But if you have some more spare time, I recommend you to read the book!
