We can reveal that the series will take a major time jump in the new episodes, with Sauron now creating the iconic One Ring. Here's the exclusive synopsis: "Season three takes place at the height of the war between the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord attempts to create the One Ring that will give him the advantage he needs to win the war and finally conquer Middle-Earth."
The War of the Elves took place during the Second Age of author J.R.R. Tolkien and was the first major battle in Middle-earth against Sauron (Charlie Vickers). It is a battle that takes place before the clash seen in the prologue of The Lord of the Rings films, namely the War of the Last Alliance.
The production also announced the directors for the third season, with two returning names and one new one. International Emmy Award nominee Charlotte Brandstrom (Shōgun) directed two episodes during season one and then directed (or co-directed) five episodes during season two. Sanaa Hamri (The Wheel of Time), who directed three episodes in season two, is also back. Stefan Schwartz (The Boys, The Walking Dead) is the newcomer on board for season three.
The first season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power remains Prime Video's biggest television premiere, while the second season is the streamer's most-watched recurring season by hours watched. Amazon says 170 million viewers worldwide watched the series and it has been one of the strongest drivers of new Prime membership sign-ups.
Season 2 ratings are higher on Rotten Tomatoes, but with far fewer voters.
