Filming for the third season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has now begun at Shepperton Studios in the United Kingdom, the third location to be filmed in as many seasons (after New Zealand and Bray Studios). Prime Video’s epic fantasy series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is adding a host of new cast members for season three, including Andrew Richardson, Zubin Varla and Adam Young. British actor Richardson is added in a series regular role.
Richardson (pictured) has a strong background in theater, and was nominated for the prestigious Ian Charleson Award in 2025 for his performances in Uncle Vanya and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. While the production hasn’t released any details about his character, he’s rumored to be playing a young sailor, a role that previously surfaced in casting information. Richardson will also soon be seen in Peacock’s Ponies series, opposite Emilia Clarke.
Zubin Varla, also from the United Kingdom, will have a recurring role. He won an Olivier Award in 2023 for his role in the musical Tammy Faye and is known for Andor and Holby City, among other things. It is notable that he already provided voice work for three episodes in season two of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power - possibly a hint that his voice will now be linked to a physical character.
Adam Young, known from Masters of the Air and EastEnders, is the third new face for season three. Nothing has been announced about his role either, although it is certain that he will play a recurring character.
These three join previously announced new names such as Jamie Campbell Bower (Stranger Things), who has a permanent role as a handsome, high-born knight and Eddie Marsan, who has a recurring role as a rough, loud man with a Scottish accent. There is speculation that he will play Durin's brother, a character who was briefly mentioned at the end of season two.
By moving production to Shepperton Studios and adding strong new actors with both theatre and television backgrounds, Prime Video seems to be committed to further scaling up and deepening the story. The secrecy surrounding the new characters has fueled fan speculation, while the team’s creative vision and consistently high production levels have only heightened anticipation for season three.
