The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power - Season 2

After a somewhat disappointing first season, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is finally getting underway. Can the One Ring muster enough power to enchant us all?
The events in this series take place during the Second Age, long before the events in the well-known books and derivative films. The origin of the rings lies here, as part of Sauron's cunning plan to gain power over all of Middle-earth.

Tolkien had originally only created the One Ring as a dark element in his children's book The Hobbit. When writing The Lord of the Rings, which took many years, he felt that more should be said about the origins and purpose of the ring. Thus this gem grew into the pivot around which the entire future of Middle-earth revolved.

How exactly the rings were made and by whom has remained rather vague in the books. Of course, Sauron was the source of evil, but details were not mentioned. The history of the war against Sauron that was subsequently fought in this era is also poor.

In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, this story is finally highlighted. The writers are obliged to leave the references in Tolkien's books completely intact. So they are not allowed to just come up with new things if that does an injustice to the books. That is no easy task, especially since few writers have amassed such a huge fan base as Tolkien.

This is the most expensive series that Amazon has made to date. Total production is estimated at around a billion dollars. This is partly reflected in the sometimes beautiful sets and props. That makes the series pleasant to watch, but just as important is a catchy and credible script.

I feel like quite a few people were turned off during the first season. That's understandable, because that first season was quite tame and slow. The characters didn't really come to life and I was even looking at my phone at times. Normally I consider that a mortal sin.

After I started the second season with slight reluctance, my opinion changed. The characters seemed to get into their roles better and there was a beginning of tension and intrigue. That crept into the story almost imperceptibly, as subtle and treacherous as Sauron himself.

At the end I even became very curious about what the third season will bring. That is a belated compliment to the writers, although I don't know yet whether they can maintain this level. It is certain that the third season will contain much more action and menace and that will greatly increase the viewing pleasure.

According to current plans, the series will consist of five seasons. If the viewing figures remain good, of course. Our world has its own 'One Ring': money.

About the writer, Karzal

Karzal
Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. The original articles, columns and reviews were actually written by others. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.

So I'm one of those people who dropped out halfway through season 1. After four episodes I didn't think I was going to like it anymore. And I still don't. Too bad about that billion dollars, but that's not for me :-)
