The fifth season of The Magicians started in January, but it now appears that this season is also the final season of the American fantasy series.
John McNamara and Sera Gamble created The Magicians, based on the books of the same name by Lev Grossman. For a number of years, The Magicians was one of the best-watched series on Syfy, but after five seasons the series will end. Although they did not know during production that the fifth season will also be the last season, the end of season five will supposedly serve as a proper closure for the series.
It is not yet known exactly why the decision was made to cancel the series. In recent years, the ratings of The Magicians have fallen, after the first two seasons, the series lost about half of its viewers, but despite that, the ratings were not extremely low. Yet it is speculated that the combination of falling viewing figures and rising costs is one of the reasons that the series has been cancelled.

The Magicians revolves around Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph, Aquarius). He will study at a secret university that specializes in magic. Together with his friends, he discovers that the magical fantasy world that she read about as children really is a serious danger to humanity. McNamara and Gamble have been the showrunners of The Magicians since day one. Henry Alonso Myers also became showrunner in the fifth season.
