The Mandalorian - Season 2
The premise of the second season of The Mandalorian is essentially the same as the first season: Mando (the titular character's nickname) and Baby Yoda embark on exciting adventures. But for the rest, I think the second season is better than the first season in almost every way. The second season is more explosive, more exciting and an even greater joy for a Star Wars fan to watch. It does ensure that you can mainly appreciate this series if you have seen the films (and of course the first season of The Mandalorian). All in all, the end result is a very confident production that lays the foundation for an even larger Star Wars universe.
In short, The Mandalorian is about a bounty hunter, played by Pedro Pascal (Narcos, Game of Thrones), who carries out assignments for payment. Mando is affiliated with the Mandalore guild of bounty hunters, assassins and para-military. In the second season, Mando has a more personal assignment. He wants to reunite Baby Yoda with his people. To get there, Mando often has to complete assignments in exchange for information. In addition, the Empire plays a bigger role this season, explaining more about what happened to them after the destruction of the second Death Star, which happened at the end of Star Wars: Episode VI, The Return of the Jedi.
The second season, like the first season, consists of eight episodes, each lasting between 32 and 52 minutes. From the first minute, there is plenty of action and you are completely in it again. The flow in this season is also a lot better. In the first season, there was a new adventure in every episode. Although the second season also started like this, it came to full speed halfway through and it felt like one whole. By the way, the ending of the second season was phenomenal in my opinion and will probably be a blast for Star Wars fans.
Major improvements have been made in the second season. The space battles are more spectacular, the groups of the Mandalore bounty hunters are further developed, the Jedi get a more important role and the chases could have been in the Star Wars movies. In this way, the series fits seamlessly with the original trilogy, while also having enough common ground with the prequel and sequel trilogies. Finally, it is a feast for Star Wars lovers. Famous planets pass by, an icon from the Star Wars movies gets a prominent role and it is full of references for the Star Wars connoisseurs.
However, there are certain aspects that could have been better. As indicated, the first half of this season was also built up with an adventure per episode. Even though they were very entertaining and visually spectacular adventures, the for-whatever principle felt very repetitive. In exchange for information, Mando always had to solve a problem. In addition, the second season lost focus at times because it was too busy introducing other Star Wars series. This all led to many interesting guest roles.
The second season was an improvement over the first season of The Mandalorian in almost every way. The action and cinematography were a feast for the eyes and it ties in seamlessly with the Star Wars films. In the beginning of the second season, it lacked a bit of focus, but halfway through the series went full steam ahead. In addition, The Mandalorian was very busy setting up several spin-offs. However, these are minor criticisms of an otherwise very strong series. The last episode alone makes it worth watching. In any case, I am very curious about what Mando and Baby Yoda will experience next.
