The Mandalorian - Season 3

The Mandalorian has a good third season. This time more depth in the history of Mandalore and something big is clearly being built.

After the disappointing Book of Boba Fett, Din Djarin - aka Mando, aka the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal: Narcos) - is finally back in the third season of The Mandalorian. The season starts immediately with the fact that Din wants to restore his honor. Honor lost in taking off his helmet. If he doesn't, he can't join the Mandalorians. To restore his honor, he must travel to the planet Mandalore which was destroyed in the past by the former Galactic Empire. This is the way!

Like the previous seasons, the third season consists of eight episodes. They range in duration from 31 to 51 minutes. This season again feels like you're watching a long Star Wars movie. There is iconic music, strong special effects, various planets are visited and (variations on) Stormtroopers pass by. Of course, there are also many references to (events of) the Star Wars movies. This season is clearly being used as a build up to something big. There are several references to an iconic Star Wars villain who can also play a role in the upcoming Ahsoka series. However, the season is quite safe and there are no major surprises (unlike the previous seasons).

This season is clearly being used as a build up to something big.

This season focuses mainly on the home planet of the Mandalorians, Mandalore, and the further elaboration of the customs of the Mandalorians. Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff: Another Life) has an important role in this season. In addition, Grogu's past is also (somewhat) further discussed. Additionally, this season features a somewhat standalone episode that focuses on former employees of the Galactic Empire reintegrating into the New Republic. At its core, this season is more about the Mandalorians in general and the focus is less on Din and Grogu specifically. There are times when you can wonder if Pedro Pascal still has the leading role. It didn't really bother me, since more depth could be given this way and the story wasn't viewed from one point of view.

Star Wars is also always known for its guest stars. For example, Daniel Craig and Tom Hardy have played a Stormtrooper in the movies. There are also a few nice guest appearances in this season of The Mandalorian. For example, there is an episode with Jack Black and Christopher Lloyd. I wonder what guest roles we will see in the next season. That will probably take some time as the current Writers Guild of America strike is causing a lot of delays.

The third season of The Mandalorian is very solid. The action is again slick, quality is high and there are Tie fighters and Stormtroopers. Basically, everything you expect from a Star Wars production. Din and Grogu are less in the foreground this season, but that offers room to explore other characters and Mandalore. This season has fewer surprises than previous seasons, but it looks like it's building up to something big. I am very curious about the next season!

Based on the above, I give the third season of The Mandalorian a well-deserved 8.5.
