Creator and showrunner Shawn Ryan said the team is excited to continue the story of Peter Sutherland, played by Gabriel Basso. According to him, the series has now been filmed in five countries across multiple continents. In reality, filming has taken place in six countries: Canada, the United States, Thailand, Turkey, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic.
The renewal comes two weeks after season three premiered on February 19. Netflix intentionally waited to see how the new season would perform, especially since for the first time there was no main role for Luciane Buchanan as Rose opposite Basso's character, Peter Sutherland.
The third season had a cautious start with 8.4 million viewers in the first week, securing a second place in the English-language Netflix chart. This was lower than season two, which attracted 13.9 million viewers in its first week. In the second week, viewership grew to 9.9 million, and seasons one and two also re-entered the Top 10, which ultimately gave enough confidence for a renewal.
The series remains a strong performer for Netflix: the first season is still in the list of most-watched English-language Netflix series ever, with approximately 98.2 million viewers in the first 91 days.
Season four must start filming by the end of May at the latest. This is related to a $31.6 million tax incentive that studio Sony Pictures Television received to move the production from New York to Los Angeles.
According to Ryan, the new season is set in a world that is much more present in Los Angeles than in New York — although it's not about Hollywood. Besides Peter Sutherland, other characters from season three will return, and he will have a new partner who has not previously appeared in the series. Unlike previous seasons, there is currently no international location planned at the beginning of the season.
In season three, the story follows Peter Sutherland as he tracks down a young employee of the U.S. Department of Treasury who fled to Istanbul with sensitive information after killing his boss. This leads him to a dark network of illegal money, where he collaborates with a tenacious journalist played by Genesis Rodriguez.
