The Orville - Season 1

When I heard that a new show would be made by the creators of Family Guy and that it would also be a science-fiction show, I was very enthusiastic. I like Family Guy and I'm a big science-fiction fan. I wasn't entirely sure as to what to expect of this show. I thought its humour and style would be quite similar to Star Trek. After watching the first season, I can say that it is quite similar, in a positive way. The Orville is, however, so much more than just another show that's similar to Star Trek.

The Orville takes place 400 years into the future, in the year 2417. We see how Earth has been altered and has almost been turned into a new planet. It's now part of the Planetary Union, some kind of peaceful partnership with its own fleet of approximately 3000 ships.

The recently divorced Ed Mercer (Seth MacFarlane, Family Guy) is given command of the Orville. He takes this chance, but is less excited once he realizes that his ex-wife (Adrianne Palicki, Agents of Shield) is the first officer of the ship. They have to put aside all their personal issues in order to make sure that their trip is a success, something that isn't an easy task. The crew has to deal with various dangerous situations.

I think that the humour in the Orville is very similar to that of Family Guy, but the story in the series is very similar to that of Star Trek. But whether or not that's a bad thing, I don't think it is. I've enjoyed watching the Orville. Its characters are solid, the stories are interesting and at some points the show is even innovative. On the internet, there are quite a few negative reviews, but I personally disagree with those. I can't wait for the second season. For Star Trek fans especially, this is a show I would recommend.

About the writer, Karzal

Karzal
Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. The original articles, columns and reviews were actually written by others. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.
