The Orville - Season 3

In the world of The Orville, set hundreds of years in the future, Ed gets a chance to prove himself. He is put in charge of a fully crewed starship to explore space.
At first glance, The Orville seems like the modern version of Star Trek, but with a funny approach. The Orville started as a series where you don't have to think and you can laugh. Although it is noticeable during the seasons that the series is becoming more serious. Fortunately, this hasn't diminished my enjoyment. In fact, it has become more fun. Hopefully, the series will continue for a long time and they will find many more storylines for it.

Season three picks up the story after the cliffhanger we were left with in season two. At least it's been a while now and we're a bit further into the conflict. We see how the crew deals with the traumas that the season two storyline has brought about. We also welcome new crew members like Charly Burke (Anne Winters, Zac and Mia). In the beginning, her behavior bothered me and then her negativity, in particular, got in the way, but over the course of the season, she is going through nice character development. She shows well what the loss of a loved one can do to you. We see a better storyline from Gordon Malloy (Scott Grimes, ER) in season three, which also made me appreciate his role more.

This season even gives me some wisdom about life that makes it clear that The Orville is not just a comedy anymore. The comparison with Star Trek is certainly present, but The Orville clearly has more special effects available. The interaction between Ed (Seth Macfarlane, American Dad) and Kelly (Adrianne Palicki, Friday Night Lights) also keeps the series exciting and unique. It's nice to see that they can work together so well despite being married before. Kelly sometimes has a hard time in her job, but manages to pull through it well.

May the force be with you

The season ends with another big blow that even moved me a bit. Many new, but also old worlds passed by. It is surprising to see what they manage to put into it. I'm looking forward to season four and hope they don't keep me waiting too long because I already miss the crew.

About the writer, Karzal

Karzal
Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. The original articles, columns and reviews were actually written by others. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.

Unfortunately, there has not yet been a final decision about season 4. The series has not yet been renewed, but has not yet been canceled either. Some time ago it was said that MacFarlane was busy with a "Ted" series, but he now seems to have opened the door again. Anyway, it will take a while before S4 comes. But I sincerely hope so. It is one of the best SF series of recent years. So much better than what Star Trek has become (although that seems to be slowly improving). The Orville truly lives up to Gene Roddenberry's legacy.
