According to insiders, NBC wanted to maintain the momentum: Greg Daniels, former showrunner of The Office and co-creator of the spin-off with Michael Koman, is already working on ideas for season two. Thanks to the early renewal, the series can return around the same time next year.
The Paper once again follows a documentary crew, this time at an old but struggling newspaper in Toledo, Ohio: the Truth-Teller. Domhnall Gleeson plays the publisher trying to breathe new life into the paper without a budget to hire journalists, forcing him to enlist the existing staff as voluntary reporters.
Daniels emphasizes that "the real adversary here is the internet, where news is available for free and advertising revenue is disappearing to Google."
The series is produced by Universal Television, part of Universal Studio Group. Daniels and Koman are co-showrunners and executive producers. Additionally, Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant, Howard Klein, Ben Silverman, and Banijay Americas are involved as executive producers.
