The latest spin-off The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon takes the viewer to France, a completely different country where zombies cause the same problems as in the rest of the world. The second sequel series of The Walking Dead follows everyone's favorite crossbowman Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus, Ride with Norman Reedus). Daryl washes up in the south of France one day for reasons that are still unknown to the viewer. He soon finds shelter at a nunnery. The residents there have a special mission for him. As Daryl undertakes a dangerous journey to Paris, he searches for a way to return to America.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon seems to be heading in the same direction as The Walking Dead: Dead City. It does not in any way renew the genre, but mainly seems to expand the known world and provide new variations on the well-known themes. Anyone looking for a completely new interpretation of zombie stories will have little to look for here. If you don't mind being served more of the same, then you will like this too.
This series seems to be mainly an excuse to show zombies in France
Daryl has arrived in France, and even The Walking Dead writing team thinks it's too far-fetched to have him accidentally washed up here. Through flashbacks, it becomes clear that he is in Europe for a reason. Whether this reason is very strong or believable from a narrative perspective remains to be seen. For now it seems like an excuse to bring The Walking Dead to France. The storyline surrounding Daryl's mission to Paris also seems to be mainly a way to show the Eiffel Tower taken over by zombies.
The first episode has enough spectacle and has nice protagonists
Despite that, there is plenty to enjoy. The first episode is quite long for a Walking Dead series, but the pace is fast and not lacking in spectacle. The fact that this is set in Europe gives the makers a good excuse to show some action with medieval weapons. Just like in The Walking Dead: Dead City, the scale of the conflict here is a lot smaller and more compact, and in my opinion that can only be a good thing. As always, Norman Reedus is a lot of fun as Daryl. His co-star Clémence Poésy (The Tunnel) does well as the nun Isabelle. The big enemy, a woman named Cenet (Anne Charrier, Maison Close) who runs an organization called The Cause, is mysterious but intriguing for now.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon offers exactly what you would expect from a The Walking Dead series: lots of Daryl, lots of spectacle, but not a lot of depth. If you are completely done with The Walking Dead, you can ignore this one. If not, this will also be a nice addition to the Walking Dead universe. In any case, I'm curious about the rest.
